Bishop Carroll VB finishes 3rd in 5A State Tournament
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Bishop Carroll was deflated after it’s semifinal loss to Lansing where they went in as the two seed.
But instead the Golden Eagles faced Maize South in the Consolation match.
First set, Ella Larkin set up McKenzie Dugan who beamed it at a Maize South player and it went out of bounds and Carroll with the 22-14 advantage.
The spike by Laurel Jones caught a couple of Eagles off guard and the Mavs narrowed the lead 15-22.
Riley Daugherty’s arm was too much for the Mavericks and the Eagles closed out the set 25-17.
Second set, Caroline Hybl sent it up to Daugherty and she hit it into the gap. Eagles extend their lead, 23-7.
Match point, Ashton George passed up to Daugherty again and she landed it narrowly inbounds.
In straight sets, Bishop Carroll won third place and Maize South finished fourth in 5A.
Bishop Carroll senior setter Ella Larkin said, “It’s actually the best we’ve done in the past four years. So I’m super proud.”
Eagles head coach Tammy Long said, “It’s a good win for us still. Of course there’s always the disappointment that we didn’t make it into the finals but we’re still pleased.”
The Eagles were looking to win their first state title since 2001.
While defending 5A state champs, St. Thomas Aquinas has been in every state title match since 2017 and pulled out the two-peat this year.
