Smoky Valley earns first trip to State Volleyball Tournament in 34 years

WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Two top 3A volleyball programs going head to head, the winner of this quarterfinal match earns a bid to the state tournament. Smoky Valley would go on to beat Cheney 3-1.

First set, Addie Heitschmidt hammered it down the line and found the back corner. Vikings go up 23-15.

Then a single block by Madi Tolle which was one of many throughout the night. Smoky valley takes set one 25-17.

Second set, Abby Rose was on fire all night. She slipped it past the Cardinals, just out of reach. That gave the Vikings set two win 25-18.

Third set, Cheney not giving up without a fight. Olivia Albers laid down the spike. It was tipped and it fell short of the Vikings defense. Cheney took set three 26-24.

Set four, Rose served set point but it hit the net and Cardinals couldn’t keep it up. Smoky Valley won off an ace 25-19.

Smoky Valley coach Sharlene Ramsey said, “I’d say we blocked and we hit. And as we kept blocking, their hitters started shutting down and they were trying to find other options so they sent some free balls, they jumped it a couple times but man, our defense, they were just digging the ball up.”

Smoky Valley beat Cheney 3-1. They improve to 31-2 on the season.

This will be the first state tournament appearance for the Vikings since the 1986 season. The first time in 34 years.
