Halstead senior, Lakin Farmer, breaks records with 533 rushing yards in single game
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Running into the history books, Halstead’s Lakin Farmer ran for more than 500 yards Friday night against Hesston.
Five hundred thirty three yards, most teams struggle to pull off that many total yards but it was a piece of cake for Halstead senior running back Lakin Farmer.
Farmer said, “It kind of just felt like a normal game. Like we were just grinding plays out and just trying to get a win.”
Farmer rushed for 533 yards and six touchdowns off 35 carries against Hesston. That’s the second best rushing performance in Kansas high school history among 11 man teams.
“I didn’t know I was that high. I knew that we had a good game and we had a lot of yards put up but I had no clue it was 530,” said Farmer. “I was just glad we got the one, it was kind of a playoff situation win that we needed.”
Halstead coach Jason Grider said watching it from the sideline, he knew Farmer would break the 303-yard school rushing record. But the team was more focused on winning the shootout with rival Hesston.
“He’s been putting up big numbers all year but what he did, that doesn’t happen very often and we’re pretty fortunate that he did,” said Grider. “We needed every yard to get the victory over Hesston. It was a tight game and it was a much needed victory for us.”
With Farmer’s strong running ability, he moved from quarterback to the backfield in the off season to benefit the team. So Farmer says setting a rushing record hasn’t hit him yet.
“It’s there, I don’t think I realize it yet. Maybe it will be there for a while, maybe not, who knows. But it’s pretty cool,” said Farmer.
“His second to last touchdown, it’s still a tight ballgame, we’re going to have to grind this out. Then the next play, he runs 95 yards for a touchdown,” said Grider.
Halstead hopes it can have another record rushing night against undefeated Collegiate in week seven.
