East pours on the points, stays unbeaten
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) -With the round-robin type schedule for the GWAL teams this season, East High had to sit out week one being the odd team out without an opponent. Since then, the Aces have been on full display outscoring opponents 134-0 in just two games of work. The Aces put up 80 against North to open the season and kept the scoring rolling against South High, winning 54-0.
It didn’t take long for the Aces to find the endzone. Freshman quarterback Daeonte' Mitchell scored on the first play from scrimmage on a designed run play. Mitchell would go on to score four rushing touchdowns in the first half and add on a handful of two-point conversions to push the Aces to a 38-0 lead at halftime.
The Aces also used a plethora of running backs to offset Mitchell in the backfield. Jomarion Nelson added a first half touchdown of his own, finishing off a drive he helped orchestrate with a number of impressive runs.
Through the air, Mitchell mostly relied on AJ King and Daylan Jones as downfield options. With the defense keeping two defenders over Jones most of the time, King made the most of his matchup and found ways to get open and move the chains.
South struggled to find a rhythm against East. Antoin Alston and Jordan Huggins split the backfield duties alongside TJ Neal.
Defensively, the Titans were able to come away with an early interception when Jordan Huggins came away with a pass in the first quarter. For East, the Aces seemed to bring eleven players to the ball each time it was snapped and forced a shut out on the night.
East improves to 2-0 and will be up against unbeaten Wichita Heights next week while Wichita South will look to rebound against Wichita West at home.
