Derby stuns Andover Central in 2OT
ANDOVER, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - After a first half controlled by Andover Central, Derby never quit, holding their own despite an early 1-0 deficit. The Panthers went the entire first half without a shot on goal, but that was a stat that changed early in the second half.
In the 45th minute, a free kick deep in Jaguar territory bounced to Caden Miller who connected to level the match at 1 less than five minutes after the break. Possession remained even for much of the second half from there, but Derby outshot the Jags 5-1 in the second 40 minutes, nearly ending things with just 22 seconds on the clock if not for a great save from Brandon Bumgarner.
Needing overtime, neither team did much in the first 10 minutes. But in the second OT Derby had a corner kick in the 91st minute and took full advantage, Andy Denesongkham delivering a perfect strike over the defense to Logan Eickelman, and the senior ended the match with a header into the back of the net.
Leo Wurth scored the lone goal for Andover Central, taking advantage of a counter attack in the game’s 5th minute.
The 2-1 road win for Derby comes after a loss last week to Trinity Academy, a 1-0 result in a match that also needed overtime.
