East scores school record 80 points in season opening win
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The East High offense looked like it wanted to make a statement in its season opener Monday night, and if the final score is any indication, they did just that.
80-0 the Blue Aces beat North High in both school’s first game of 2020, a rare Monday contest held following the uncertainty if their seasons would even be played.
A.J. King, a transfer from Wichita Southeast, lead the way early, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter alone. Two of those were receiving, while the third came on a punt return that saw him go across the field splitting the North coverage unit for the score.
Then in the second quarter, it was Caquoy Patterson’s turn to take over. The senior receiver reached the endzone twice in the second, with fellow senior Daylon Jones getting in on the action late in the quarter.
Daeonte' Mitchell, a heralded freshman quarterback, split time with sophomore Tayden Pham in the season opener. Pham threw the first score of the game, before Mitchell came in to lead the way in the blowout win.
The 80 points are a school record, and it could have been more; the Aces failed on 8 points after of their 12 touchdowns scored on the night.
East will have the week off before traveling to South on September 25. North will try to bounce back against the Titans on Saturday.
