Hesston wins shootout over Hillsboro
HESSTON, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - After an early fourth down stop, a track meet broke out on the gridiron between Hesston and Hillsboro Friday night, with the Swathers coming out on top 44-39.
The Swathers struck first, with a bruising end around from Brady Cox to make it 8-0. But after a punt, Hillsboro’s defense got the answer, with the Trojans swarming Ryan Eilert and forcing an errant throw right at Frank Wichert, Wichert returning the pick for a score and cutting it to 8-7.
The ensuing Hesston drive was highlighted by an incredible catch from Swather receiver Ben Bollinger, going over the top of the defender to steal the ball away for a big 3rd and 20 conversion. That would lead to an Eilert keeper and another two point try to make it a 16-7 game. But again, Hillsboro needed no time to answer. Jamari Harris took the handoff and took off, 63 yards for the score to make it a 16-13 game.
The Trojans forced a Hesston punt, and took advantage of that to the tune of a 4th down conversion for 6, a Matthew Potucek pass to Dillon Boldt to give Hillsboro its first lead. But that was also short lived, Hesston needing no time to answer with a 59 yard pass to Brayden Schilling. Hesston forced a fumble the next Trojan play, and turned that into another score just before halftime.
After the break, Hillsboro got the second half scoring started on a short carry from harris for his second touchdown of the game, but just before the quarter ended Eilert got his second rushing score to push it back to a 12 point game, 38-26.
In the 4th, it was the Potucek to Boldt connection once again, this time from 59 yards out to cut the deficit to 5, but that’s as close as they would get with Hesston adding another score to ice it.
The win moves Hesston to 2-0 on the year, with a visit to Pratt next Friday before starting play in perhaps the toughest district in the state. Hillsboro will face Smoky Valley before they too begin district play in class 2A.
