Andover picks up first win 21-0 over Ark City
ANDOVER, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - It took some time, but Andover wore down Ark City with its run game in the 21-0 win Friday in Andover.
Outside of a first-quarter touchdown from Andover, neither the Trojans nor Ark City could get any offense going through the first half, but both defenses provided plenty of highlights.
Ark City’s Haden O’Toole took full advantage of an overthrown ball by Andover’s Nehemiah Robinson and picked it off at the Bulldogs' own four-yard line.
On the next play, Ark City took a shot when quarterback Gabe Welch found O’Toole for a huge 82-yard gain, but even the offensive explosion provided a defensive highlight. Andover’s Tayton Klein got beat on the route, but he stayed with the play, ran him down, and shoved O’Toole out of bounds.
The play was big because Ark City didn’t score despite the huge gain. Andover took a 7-0 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, both team’s quarterbacks threw interceptions on back-to-back drives.
First, the Andover receiver couldn’t handle Robinson’s pass and Ark City’s Cadon Clark pulled down the tipped ball.
Then, a few plays later, Welch overthrew a ball and Andover’s Isaiah Maikori came down with it. Maikori turned in a great return and needed one block for the pick-six, but couldn’t get it.
The Trojans then ate quite a bit of the clock with their run game. Ashton Ngo broke a run for 18 yards, then picked up a crucial first down to keep the drive alive off the interception.
Andover worked the drive down to the four-yard line before Ngo got the job done to put his team up 14-0.
The Trojans cruised through the fourth for the 21-0 win a week after Ark City beat Winfield 33-0.
Andover moves to 1-1 on the season and will host Salina Central in week three.
Ark City also stands at 1-1 and will travel to Goddard for week three.
