CLASS 6A

1. Lawrence (1-0) [Last week: 3]

Class Notes: No one in Class 6A East played in Week 1. Overall, 6A went 3-6 in Week 1. Derby takes a step back after its biggest margin of loss in 10 years with its defeat to Mill Valley. However, the Panthers have shown the ability to bounce back. In ’17, Derby lost 50-20 to Goddard in Week 2, and then advanced all the way to the state title game before a 49-42 loss to Blue Valley North. Plus, Mill Valley has staked an early claim as the best team in Kansas. This class should gain clarity as more teams, including the City League, start play this week.

Class Notes: A lot of positives in this class in the first week, notably for Mill Valley’s win against Derby. Hays High really struggled with penalties but found a way. Goddard, Maize, Maize South, and especially Carroll and De Soto with quality victories. Seaman, expected to be an improved team, has a key contest versus Topeka Hayden this week. Wichita Northwest and Aquinas return to play this week.

Class 4A

Class Notes: Paola bumps into the top-5 this week after a big Week 1 win. Goddard defeated Buhler in the first week. St. James resumes play this week, and Bishop Miege is expected to start in Week 3. KC Piper is expected to play every game on the road.

Class Notes: Dominant wins for the top-3 squads, while Holton required a last-second field goal to beat Nemaha Central. Southeast of Saline was tied with Minneapolis before it pulled away. Chapman and Columbus into the top-10 after quality wins versus Sabetha and Frontenac, respectively.

Class 2A

Class Notes: Norton and Garden Plain move into the top-5 in the poll after losses by Nemaha Central and Pittsburg Colgan. Also, Cimarron and Osage City suffered losses. Garden Plain with a big jump after a 14-13 victory versus rival Conway Springs, and Rossville a strong victory versus Centralia, the defending 1A champion. Silver Lake is expected to start in Week 3 after COVID-19 concerns.

Class Notes: Valley Heights had the best win for the class with a victory against Class 3A Marysville. Significant Twitter discussion occurred Sunday between a possible contest between 11-man Sedgwick and eight-man Canton-Galva. Ultimately, C-G scheduled a contest against longtime rival Moundridge.
