Garden Plain holds for 14-13 win over Conway Springs
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The rivalry between Garden Plain and Conway Springs started slow, but ended in a thrilling 14-13 win for the Owls.
On the first play of the season from scrimmage, Garden Plain’s Tranden Daerr found Colby Haukap for a 31-yard completion. The Owls couldn’t capitalize and remained scoreless through the first quarter.
Conway saw the Owls’ big gain and got in on the action. One of the first plays for the Cardinals, quarterback Heath Hilger put up a pass for Jonathan Wright he went up and got it over the defender.
Conway Springs picked up 42 yards on the play, but just like Garden Plain, couldn’t put up any points.
Garden Plain finally got on the board midway through the second quarter when Daerr rolled out of the pocket, avoided the pressure and hit Haukap waiting in the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown on fourth down.
With just less than four and a half minutes left in the first half, Garden Plain’s offensive line opened a truck-sized hole for Kade Rockers to speed through for the 34-yard touchdown. The score made it 14-0.
Conway Springs tried to get back into it late in the first half with a 15-yard pass from Hilger to Patrick Friess, but couldn’t replicate the same success a few plays later.
Hilger tried to take another shot downfield, but Garden Plain’s Haukap jumped the route and picked off the pass.
The Cardinals were able to cut the score to 14-7 by the end of the third quarter, and scored again in the fourth with less than three minutes left to make it 14-13. Conway couldn’t convert the two-point conversion for the win and Garden Plain held on for the win.
