WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Hesston Swathers look to the first Friday night of the season as a chance to start fast out of the gate. Following a season that saw them upended in by Clearwater in the playoffs, the team is looking at proving themselves even more in 2020.

“A lot of people thought that that we could play in our league but when we play teams in another district then we would go on and fade out,” explained senior Ben Bollinger. “So there is a challenge, but we believe in ourselves that we can play with these guys. There are a lot of good teams in 3A across the state but we are confident in who we are, and confident in each other.”

That confidence can be attributed to the experience the Swathers return from a year ago. Head Coach Tyson Bauerle says the team will have 8 starters on both sides of the ball. He says the leadership aspect of his unit is something that shows up each fall.

“We have some senior leadership on this team that has really set the tone and we have had that in the years past as well,” Bauerle shared. “Credit goes to those past years and that crew that kind of showed what it looked like to take over a team,” he finished.

Bauerle says a big part of the returning group will be the offensive line and outside skill positions. Owen O’Halloran returns at offensive guard and defensive tackle for his senior year. He agrees with his coach, that the preparation this team has put in will carry them far.

“We busted our tails this summer, because we want to see how good we could be,” O’Halloran commented. “We want to see what our potential is,” he said.

Part of that potential will come from the speed Hesston will bring into the season. Baurle hopes to put that speed on display from the opening kick-off.

“Our guys are going to have a blast on Friday, you can feel that they have been pent up for a little bit,” he shared. “Our guys are going to come out fast, they’re going to come out flying around, and hopefully they have fun doing it,” Bauerle smiled.
