Sedgwick returns key players ahead of 2020 season
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) -The Sedgwick Cardinals enter the 2020 season after more than just a playoff berth, they want to take the next step. If you ask Head Coach Jeff Werner, he will tell you the same. “We’ve stalled out at the regional title game level, we would like to get into the final four,” he noted.
Now the Cardinals are looking to go further in the playoffs after a 9-1 finish to the 2019 season. Sedgwick returns a bulk of its talent from a year ago in senior Henry Burns and juniors, Sam Culp and Lance Hoffsommer.
Hoffsommer stepped in as the signal-caller for the Cardinals last season and almost immediately took off. His sophomore campaign finished with 2,754 yards passing while leading an offense that averaged more than 40 points a game. “It’s not often that we play a lot of sophomores and so for him to play at quarterback as a sophomore and have a really good season and then to bloom athletically, we are kind of excited to see what he can do. Maybe we can run the ball a little more now, and he’ll help us in the run game,” Werner said.
When asked about the upcoming season, Hoffsommer agreed with the assessment from his head coach saying, “I’m looking forward to having another year under my belt, especially having more confidence this year.”
One of Hoffsommer’s main targets will be Henry Burns who returns from an all-state caliber year in 2019. As a key two-way player for the Cardinals last year and looks to pick up where he left off last season saying this team has the potential to be special. “I want to have a fighting chance against anyone we play this season,” Burns said. “When guys are flying around and having a good time, that makes it very easy to do.” He finished.
Burns touted a standout game against Meade last season where he hauled in five catches for 121 yards and a touchdown.
The Sedgwick Cardinals open the season September 4th against Sterling.
