With the 2013 fall North Central Kansas League season wrapping up, the NCKL has earned one state trophy and two football teams still alive as the football season heads into postseason competition.
The Marysville Lady Bulldogs earned that state team trophy on Saturday when they finished in 3rd place in the Class 3A volleyball state tournament.
The Abilene Cowboys and Clay Center Tigers each qualified for the Class 4A state playoffs this past Thursday as district runner-up teams. This Tuesday Abilene will play at Goodland and Clay Center will play at McPherson.
The Panther football team finished the season Friday night when they dropped their 7th game of the year, 20-0 to Clay Center. The Panthers finished the season 2-7, 1-4 on the year.
The Cowboy football team wrapped up the 2013 regular season Thursday night with a 49-42, double overtime victory over Smoky Valley. The victory propelled Abilene into the Class 4A playoffs where they will play at Goodland this Tuesday night in the opening round.
The Tiger football team finished the regular season Thursday night with a 20-0 win over Concordia. The win propels Clay Center into the Class 4A playoffs where they will play at McPherson Tuesday night. The Tigers finished the regular season with a 6-3, 3-2 record.
The Lady Tiger volleyball team qualified for the Class 4A II state tournament where they went 1-2 in pool play on Friday as they beat Jefferson West in three matches but lost to Trinity Academy and Santa Fe Trail and did not advance out of pool play.
The Clay Center cross country teams ran at the Class 4A state meet on Saturday where the Lady Tigers were 6th, as a team, with 169 points and were led by Mariah Larson, who finished in 39th place while the Tiger boys were 10th as a team with 233 points and were led by Caleb Siebold, who finished in 31st place.
The Bulldog football team finished the 2013 season Thursday night with a 19-6 loss to Nemaha Valley. The Bulldogs finished the season with an 0-9, 0-5 record.
The Lady Bulldog volleyball team earned third place in the 3A state volleyball tournament over the weekend as they began play on Friday in pool play with a 2-1 record, beating Southeast of Saline and Douglass before losing to Silver Lake. The 2-1 record earned Marysville a berth in pool play competition on Saturday. In the semifinals the Lady Bulldogs lost to Cheney 25-17, 25-19 but came back to defeat Hoisington 26-24, 25-23 in the consolation finals for third place in the state tournament.
The Marysville cross country teams ran at the Class 3A state meet in Lawrence’s Rim Rock Farms and the Lady Bulldogs were led by Bryclin Alstrom, who finished in 16th place while the Bulldog boys were paced by Joe Smith, who finished in 6th place, individually.
The Red Raider football team finished its 2013 season Thursday night with their second loss of the season as the Raiders lost 57-14 to Topeka Hayden. The Red Raiders, the NCKL champions, finished the season with a 7-2, 5-0 record.
The Wamego cross country teams ran in the state meet, it hosted, on Saturday with the Raider boys finishing in 5th place with 151 points and led by Matt Scherer, who finished in 28th place, while the Lady Raiders were led by Allison Seufert, who finished in 40th place.
The Fighting Irish football team concluded the 2013 season with its third win of the year as the Irish scored an upset of district champion McPherson 50-46. The game concluded Chapman’s season with 3-6, 2-3 record.
