The Indians of Medicine Lodge hope to improve upon last year’s 3-6 mark. Despite 13 returning lettermen, they still have some holes to fill.
Coach: Josh Ybarra (3-6 overall, second year at Medicine Lodge)
2013 Recap: 3-6 overall
Returning Starters: 8 offense, 7 defense
Returning Lettermen: 13
2014 District: Moundridge, Salina Sacred Heart, Sedgwick, Inman.
For the Indians to be successful this year, they have to stay hungry.
“We have to be hungry this summer in the weight room and at camps and we have to be hungry throughout the season,” Ybarra said. “As a team, we have to execute better and become more dynamic.”
Ybarra will be searching for someone to handle the wing-T/pistol wing-T from the quarterback position. Gage Axline is the lone returning letterman at running back, so look for the 5-foot-11-inch, 182-pound junior to get most of the carries, at least early in the season.
At 6-3, Ethan Hargett has the height for a wide receiver. His fellow juniors Nick Noland and Micah Richert will provide two more pairs of sure hands at wide out. Tight end Aaron Woodward brings nice size (6-0, 187) for both catching and blocking.
On the line, senior Erich Fischer is a 6-6, 190-pound string bean. Providing the bulk are juniors Thad Ehresman (6-1, 245), Darrek McGrath (5-10, 221) and Sergio Marquez (6-1, 252).
Operating out of a 4-3 alignment, Medicine Lodge has returning starters up front, in the middle and deep.
Four returners will bolster the line for the Indians. Juniors Thad Ehresman, Darrek McGrath and Sergio Marquez each tip the scales between 220 and 250 pounds. The lightweight of this quartet – senior Erich Fischer – comes in at 190 pounds but will hover over most linemen at 6-feet-6.
The linebackers behind the big guys in the trenches will be senior Aaron Woodward (6-0, 187) and junior Gage Axline (5-11, 182). Axline was an honorable mention all-league backer last year.
A trio of returning starters, all juniors, will be patrolling the secondary. Ethan Hargett provides the height at 6-3. He will be joined by Nick Noland and Micah Richert.
Odds and Ends:
“Our main goal is to always move forward. Keep improving on what we have accomplished in the past,” Ybarra said. “Last season was a step forward, but it is time to take a bigger step. We want to compete with everyone we play and we want to win games.”
