Kapaun Mt. Carmel high school announced today that Marvin Estes has retired as the head coach of girls basketball. Estes coached the team from 1976 to 1980, and returned to coach the Crusaders in 2011 through the end of the 2014 season. In his years coaching, Kapaun has a record of 132-32, and won state championships in 1979 and 2012.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a coach of these student-athletes,” said Estes. “I have been blessed to have been given the opportunity to return to Kapaun Mt. Carmel and work with these young ladies, and I have been appreciative of the full support of the Kapaun Mt. Carmel community. Given those blessings and that support, the decision to retire was a tough one, but it is time.”
Estes informed the team of his retirement after the Crusaders beat Great Bend 58-49 to take third place in the 5A state basketball tournament. He will continue to teach and coach track at Kapaun.
