Last fall Andover girl’s tennis team went on a historic run, capturing league, regional and state titles for the first time in school history. With all its core talent returning, Andover doesn’t plan on letting up this season.
“Our team is incredibly proud of last year, but we are looking forward and motivated for this season,” coach Jessica Dibble said. “Right now the girls are working hard, and getting back to having the confidence that’s necessary to winning. We’re really going to emphasize the mental aspect of the game right off the bat.”
Andover lost some senior leadership, but Dibble believes her team is replete with talented seniors and underclassmen ready to fill those positions. Andover has a ton of depth in its sophomore and junior classes, with players such as Robyn Fritze, Addy Maples, Madi Hearne, Caitlyn White, Grace Ball and Dohee Lee returning.
As a freshman Lee was dominant, only suffering one loss in the regular season. Lee’s talent was showcased on the biggest stage when she redeemed her earlier loss to Courtney Lubbers of Bishop Carroll in the state finals. Her victory clinched the state and singles title, Andover’s first in school history.
Ball also proved to be a talented freshman in her own right, placing fifth at state. “Grace had a tough draw last year with having to play a previous state champion, and the 2013 state runner up, Courtney lubbers, in the quarters. She is playing tougher, more mature, and has physically got stronger since last year,” Dibble said
Despite having star players on the team, Dibble said her team is united as one and everyone played a pivotal role in winning the state title last season. This year Andover is welcoming all challenges as they continue to prepare for its first big test against Collegiate September 11.
“We are focused and ready to compete. We are committed to another successful season Our returners have worked very hard this summer and I'm excited for their success this year.We are very united and know that with an intense but positive team atmosphere we can achieve great results again.”
