GWAL PREDICTION BLOG

2010 Outlook:

Offense:

Experience and depth will be a problem for the offense at Southeast this season according to head coach Gary Guzman. The Golden Buffaloes have only two returning all-league performers in Kenneth Sellers on the offensive line and Nick Taylor at wide receiver.

The big task will be to replace first-team all-league running back, and Oklahoma State commit, Joseph Randle. Randle rushed for 1107 yards last season. The top returning rusher is Tyrone Metcalfe who had 127 yards rushing. Not far behind him was fellow returning player Braden Smith who had 126 yards rushing. Dexter Hayes will also factor in the backfield mix.
Tevin Parks will step in at quarterback after the graduation of Jeremiah Plowden. Parks only attempted one varsity pass last season. Taylor and returning tight end/wide receiver Brett Bluma will be his top targets. Taylor was a big play threat last season as he averaged 18-yards-per-catch.

Cameron Rhodes is the only other returning starter on an inexperienced offensive line.

Defense:

The defense is much the same story as the offense. The unit is inexperienced and lacks depth. Randle and LJ Tillman are the two cogs that are going to be missing this year after both were selected to the GWAL first-team all-league team.

Nick Taylor and Dexter Hayes will step into the secondary to replace Randle. Metcalfe will also be a force on defense at linebacker. The two-way player had 82 tackles last season and two fumble recoveries. Those numbers got Metcalfe placed on the all-league honorable-mention team.

Sellers and Smith will return to the defense as linemen. Bluma and Wright will also return at defensive end.

Odds and Ends:

Southeast’s district remains the same, featuring Wichita East, Wichita Heights and Derby. Both Heights and Derby made it to the state semifinals last year with Heights losing in the championship game…Southeast had good margins last year as it averaged 22.3-points-per-game while giving up 17.7…Southeast opens with Dodge City once again this year. Last season the Red Demons beat Southeast 19-3. This season’s game is on Sept. 3 in Dodge City.
