HAYS, Kansas -

In one week it becomes official. Even before the high school football season begins, Hays High quarterback Alex Delton will have his National Letter of Intent signed with Kansas State.

“I’m completely stoked,” said Delton. “To have the official scholarship and the financial aid saying that I will be able to play and enroll in January at K-State…It’s a good feeling.”

Delton is signing August 28th in a ceremony at Hays High School. He is allowed to sign early because he is graduating from Hays High in December. He will enroll at Kansas State in January, which he believes will help him in the fall.

“It’s a huge advantage for me as a quarterback to get down there and learn some stuff,” said Delton. “The counselors and principals at Hays High have been great just helping me out and keeping everything straight with the NCAA cause that stuff can be tricky.”

Delton first started getting national attention after his sophomore year when he put up 1198 yards and 15 touchdowns through the air, and another 640 yards and 10 TD rushing. He had slightly lower numbers as a junior, but he also battled nagging injuries.

The Indians drop down to Class 4A Division I this season and are considered one of the favorites. After missing the playoffs last season, Delton says he has some unfinished business before he heads to Manhattan.

“Every day we practice with a mentality of we know it’s going to be a big time season and we are projected to do some big time things,” said Delton. “Really every day we just have the mentality to be the best team in the state and we practice like that.”

Hays opens the season September 5 on the road at 6A Olathe Northwest.
