The majority of the Wheat State basketball teams remained close to home for their 2012-2013 mid-season basketball experience as Centre hosted seven of the nine Wheat State teams in the Cougar Basketball Classic Tournaments this past week.

The Hope Lady Lions were able to win the girls’ portion of the tournament while the lone non-Wheat State team in the field, Marion, walked away with the boys title.

Little River and Goessel were the only Wheat State teams not competing at Centre as the Little River and Goessel boys both competed at Burrton and this week the Little River girls will compete in the Ell-Saline Tournament while the Lady Bluebirds of Goessel will compete at the Berean Academy Tournament.

Solomon

The Gorillas and Lady Gorillas each took part in the Centre tournament with the Gorilla boys earning a 2-1 record and placing third with wins over Hope, 70-23, and 61-58 over Peabody-Burns. The Lady Gorillas, meanwhile, also went 2-1 and placed fifth with a 42-39 win over Marion and a 52-45 win over Peabody-Burns.

Hope

The Lions and Lady Lions of Hope competed at Centre with the Lady Lions going 3-0 to win the tournament and the Lion boys going 1-2 and finishing in sixth place. The Lady Lions opened the tournament with a 43-29 win over Solomon, earned a 27-12 win over White City in the semifinals before topping 49-47 in the championship game. The Lion boys, meanwhile, picked up their only win, 42-37 over Elyria Christian, in the conslation semifinal round.

Wakefield

The Wakefield teams competed at Centre High School for their mid-season experience. The Bomber boys went 1-2 in the tournament with their lone win coming in the 7th-8th place game when they defeated Elyria Christian 50-32. The Lady Bombers, meanwhile, went 0-3 in the tournament.

Little River

The Redskin boys competed in the Burrton Invitational where they finished with a 2-1 record and finished in third place in the tournament as they opened with a 59-44 win over Burrton in the opening round, before falling to Berean Academy in the semifinals, before bouncing back to top Pretty Prairie 60-42 in the 3rd-4th place contest. The Lady Redskins, meanwhile, will compete in the Ell-Saline Tournament this week.

White City

The White City teams played in the Cougar Classic tournaments at Centre where the White City boys finished with a 2-1 record for second place after falling to Marion in the championship game after opening the tournament with a 38-31 win over Wakefield and following that with a 51-41 win over Peabody-Burns in the semifinals. The Lady Huskies, meanwhile, finished with a 1-2 record to place fourth with their lone win being a 43-33 win over Marion in the opening round.

Centre

The Cougars and Lady Cougars played host to the Cougar Classic basketball tournaments where the Cougar boys went 2-1 to finish in fifth place with a 53-35 win over Wakefield in the second round and a 45-31 win over Hope in the final round. The Lady Cougars, meanwhile, went 2-1 to finish in 2nd place with a 58-15 win over Wakefield in the opening round and a 42-30 win over Elyria Christian in the semifinals before losing to Hope 49-47 in the championship game.

Goessel

The Bluebird boys competed in the Burrton Invitational this past week where they posted a 1-2 record to place sixth with their lone win coming in the consolation semifinals when they defeated Burrton 56-50. The Lady Bluebirds, meanwhile, fell to Moundridge 51-29 on Friday and will compete in the Berean Academy Tournament this week.

Peabody Burns

The Peabody Burns basketball teams competed in the Centre tournaments this past week where the Warrior boys finished 1-2 and in fourth place with their lone win coming in the opening round when they topped Centre 59-51. The Lady Warriors, meanwhile, also went 1-2 in the tournament to place sixth with their lone win coming in the consolation semifinals, a 41-16 win over Wakefield.

Elyria Christian

The Eagles and Lady Eagles competed in the Courgar Classic Tournaments with the Lady Eagles going 2-1 in the tournament to place third with an opening round 22-20 win over Peabody-Burns and a 35-23 win over White City in the 3rd – 4th place contest. The Eagle boys, meanwhile, went 0-3 in the tournament.
