SOLOMON, Kan.—
2013 begins without a single Wheat State basketball team protecting a zero in the loss column but six different teams still have unblemished Wheat State records.The Solomon boys and Goessel girls both currently lead their respective divisions with 3-0 Wheat State records while the Little River boys, Peabody Burns boys, Little River girls and Peabody-Burns girls all stand with 1-0 records in Wheat State play as the 2012-2013 concludes with the 2013 portions of everybody’s schedule.
Solomon opened 2013 by splitting a twin bill with Goessel as the Lady Gorillas opened the evening suffering a 56-49 defeat in overtime while the Gorilla boys bounced back to take a 75-42 victory over the Bluebirds. The Solomon teams will return to the courts this Tuesday when they play at Wakefield.
Hope
The Lions and Lady Lions have yet to open play in 2013, that will come Monday night when they play host to Junction City’s St. Xavier High School in a basketball doubleheader.
Wakefield
Wakefield High School opened 2013 by hosting Elyria Christian High School and lost the girls game 21-19 but the score from the boys’ game was not reported in.
Little River
Little River High School opened 2013 by splitting two games with Ellinwood High School as the Lady Redskins lost 67-42 but the Redskin boys bounced back to take a 50-31 victory.
White City
White City High School’s basketball teams opened 2013 by splitting with Centre in a Wheat State showdown as the Lady Huskies lost 54-42 but the Huskies boys came back to earn a 60-56 Wheat State victory. White City will return to the court on Friday when they play at Little River.
Centre
The Cougars and Lady Cougars opened 2013 by splitting a Wheat State showdown with White City High School as the Lady Cougars opened the evening with a 54-42 win over White City but the Cougar boys suffered a 60-56 loss. Centre High School will return to the courts on Tuesday when they play host to Little River High School.
Goessel
Goessel High School’s basketball teams opened 2013 by splitting with Solomon as the Lady Bluebirds picked up a 56-49 overtime victory over Solomon while the Bluebird boys suffered a 75-42 loss. Goessel will return to the basketball courts on Tuesday when they play at Argonia High School.
Peabody Burns
Peabody Burns High School’s basketball teams opened 2013 by sweeping two games from Flinthills High School on Friday. The Lady Warriors opened the evening with a 46-34 victory and the Warrior boys followed that win with a 50-30 victory of their own. Peabody Burns will return to the courts this Tuesday when they play at White City High School in a Wheat State doubleheader.
Elyria Christian
Elyria Christian High School’s basketball teams opened 2013 by playing a doubleheader at Wakefield High School on Friday. The Lady Eagles picked up a 21-19 win over the Lady Bombers. The score from the boys’ contest was not reported.
