The Wheat State had seven different teams play their way into sub-state championship games this past week at six different sub-state sites but of those six teams playing for berths in this week’s state tournament only three teams, one girl squad and two boys’ teams earned their way into their respective state tournaments.

On the boys’ side the Wheat State had Little River, Peabody Burns and White City playing in sub-state championships with Wheat State champion White City being the only boys’ squad to keep its season alive this week at the Class 1AII state tournament in Hays. On the girls’ side the Wheat State had Centre, Hope, White City and Elyria Christian playing in their respective sub-state championships. Hope and White City were playing each other, with Hope winning, and Centre also earned its way into the girls’ Class 1A I state tournament in Emporia while Elyria Christian fell to Wilson it its sub-state championship game.

Solomon

The Solomon basketball teams saw their seasons come to an end this past week at the Class 2A Belleville sub-state. The Gorilla boys ended their season with a 16-6 record after opening the sub-state with a 78-58 win over Wakefield but falling to eventual champion Republic County 59-46 in the semifinals. The Lady Gorillas, meanwhile, ended their season with a 9-12 record after falling 67-50 to Lincoln in the opening round.

Hope

The Lady Lion basketball team is one of the three Wheat State teams still playing in the 2012-2013 season after they won the championship of the Tescott sub-state tournament. The Lion boys, meanwhile, saw their season come to an end Friday night in the semifinals. The Hope boys lost 41-34 to eventual champion White City to see their season come to an end with an 8-12 record. The Lady Lions, meanwhile, had a bye in the opening round, picked up a 54-17 win over Tescott in the semifinals and won the championship with a 37-25 victory over White City. The Lady Lions will face Golden Plains in the opening round of the 1AII state tournament in Hays on Wednesday.

Wakefield

The Wakefield Bombers and Lady Bomber basketball teams saw their seasons come to an end this past week in the Belleville sub-state tournament. The Bomber boys, who ended their season with a 5-16 record, lost to Solomon 78-58 in the opening round of the tournament while the Lady Bombers, who end their campaign with a 1-20 record, fell 56-27 to Republic County in the opening round.

Little River

The Little River Redskin boys basketball team played their way into the sub-state championship game at Sterling, but the Redskin saw their season come to a halt after a 42-39 defeat at the hands of Inman in the championship game. The Redskin boys, who opened their tournament with a 71-15 win over Pratt Skyline followed by a 59-55 win over Sterling in the semifinals, ended their season with a 17-5 record. The Lady Redskins, meanwhile, lost 49-27 to Greensburg in the opening round to end their season after a 13-8 campaign.

White City

The Huskies boys team is one of three Wheat State teams still alive this week after they won the championship of the Tescott sub-state tournament. The Lady Huskies, meanwhile, saw their season ended after a loss in the championship game to Wheat State rival Hope. The Huskie boys opened their tournament with a bye in the opening round, defeated Hope 41-34 in the semifinals and knocked off Beloit St. John’s 42-40 in the championship game. The Huskies will face Dighton in the opening round of the Class 1A II state tournament in Hays on Thursday. The Lady Huskies also received a bye in the opening round and beat Beloit St. John’s 38-24 in the semifinals before falling to Hope 37-25 in the championship game. The Lady Huskies ended their season with a 10-11 record.

Centre

The Lady Cougars qualified for the Class 1A I state tournament this past week after winning the Burrton sub-state championship. The Cougar boys, meanwhile, saw their season come to an end with a 11-9 record after falling to Fairfield in the semifinals of the tournament. The Cougar boys opened the tournament with a bye before falling in the semifinals. The Lady Cougars, meanwhile, also opened with a bye, topped Pretty Prairie 44-33 in the semifinals before downing Fairfield 60-37 in the championship game. The Lady Cougars will face off against Hudson Wednesday in the opening round of the Class 1A I state tournament in Emporia.

Goessel

The Bluebird and Lady Bluebird basketball teams saw their 2012-2013 season come to an end this past week after falling in the Burrton sub-state tournament. The Bluebird boys lost to tournament host Burrton 57-48 in the opening round to end their 2012-2013 season with a 11-9 record. The Lady Bluebirds, meanwhile, beat Goessel 47-23 in the opening round before losing to Fairfield in the semifinals to see their season come to an end after a 10-12 campaign.

Peabody Burns

The Peabody Burns boys team played its way into the Moundridge sub-state tournament championship game before seeing its season end with a 12-10 overall record. The Lady Warriors, meanwhile, lost in the semifinal round to end their season with a 10-12 record. The Warrior boys opened the tournament with 45-42 win over Oxford and advanced to the championship game with a 62-48 win over Central Burden in the semifinals. The Lady Warriors opened their tournament play with a 47-46 overtime victory over Herington before falling to Moundridge 49-16 in the semifinals.

Elyria Christian

The Elyria Christian High School basketball teams saw their seasons come to an end this past week after losses in the Sylvan sub-state tournament. The Lady Eagles, who ended their season with a 13-8 record, received a bye in the opening round and played their way into the championship game with a 36-25 win over Sylvan but lost 47-32 to Wilson in the sub-state championship game. The Eagle boys, meanwhile, lost to Sylvan 67-55 in the opening round of the tournament to end their season with a 4-16 record.
