SOLOMON, Kan.—
The Wheat State League football teams received good tidings and bad tiding this past week around the league as the entire league teams, who play football, are now into district action.Currently the Wheat State has three different teams that are undefeated in district play while Wakefield has just one district loss, but so do all of the other teams in the Bomber’s district.
Little River’s loss, coupled with Solomon’s win over Lincoln leaves the Gorillas as the only fully undefeated team remaining in the WSL in 2012.
Solomon
The Lady Gorilla volleyball team traveled to McPherson on Tuesday for a Wheat State triangular with Peabody Burns and dropped both matches on the evening as they lost to Elyria 25-23, 25-21 and to Peabody Burns 25-16, 25-21. … The Gorillas picked up their fifth win and fifth via the mercy rule this past Friday night when they opened district play with a 70-20 win over Lincoln. The Gorillas will remain in district play this Friday night when they play at Canton-Galva.
Hope
The Lady Lion volleyball team played host to Goessel and Wakefield in a Wheat State triangular Tuesday evening and split the two matches, defeating Wakefield 25-14, 19-25, 25-21 but falling to Goessel 25-5, 25-19. … The Lions football team got the week off from the field this past Friday night when Wichita Word of Life High School was unable to field a football team and forfeited to the Lions. The Lions will return to action this Friday night when they play host to Southern Cloud High School.
Wakefield
The Lady Bomber volleyball team traveled to Hope on Tuesday for a Wheat State triangular but dropped both matches, falling to Hope 25-14, 19-25, 25-21 and falling to Goessel 25-8, 25-14. … The Bomber football team got back on the winning side of things Friday night when it beat Linn 62-12. The Bombers will play host to Clifton Clyde this Friday night.
Little River
The Lady Redskin volleyball team played host to a Wheat State triangular with Centre and White City on Tuesday and split the two matches as they beat White City 25-21, 25-17 but lost to Centre 24-26, 25-12, 25-20. Saturday the Lady Redskins played in the Canton-Galva tournament where they went 1-3 and placed sixth in the tournament. Little River lost to Hesston 25-12, 25-18, Goessel 25-20, 25-17 and beat Central Christian 25-23, 25-15 in pool play and dropped a 25-20, 25-16 match to Wichita Sunrise in the the 5th-6th place match. … The Redskin football team suffered its first loss of the season Friday night when the Redskins lost 26-8 to Pretty Prairie. The Redskins will look to get back on the winning side of things this Friday when they play host to Lincoln High School.
White City
The Lady Huskies volleyball team played a Wheat State triangular at Little River with Centre on Tuesday but lost both matches, falling to Little River, 25-21, 25-17 and to Centre 25-7, 25-16. … The Huskies football team suffered its fifth loss of the season this past Friday when they dropped a 42-36 contest to Southern Cloud. The Huskies will continue to search for that first win this Friday night when they play host to Burrton.
Centre
The Lady Cougar volleyball team played a Wheat State triangular at Little River on Tuesday and won both matches, defeating Little River 24-26, 25-12, 25-20 and also defeating White City 25-7, 25-16. … The Cougar football team suffered a 62-28 loss to Peabody Burns this past Friday night and will look to get back on the winning side of things this Friday night when they play host to Cedar Vale/Dexter.
Goessel
The Lady Bluebird volleyball team finished off its Wheat State play Tuesday evening with another Wheat State sweep for the season. The Lady Bluebirds played a triangular at Hope with Wakefield on Tuesday and won both matches, the Lady Bluebirds beat Wakefield 25-8, 25-14 and completed the sweep with a 25-5,25-19 win over Hope. Saturday the Lady Bluebirds played in the Canton-Galva Invitational where they went 2-3 and place in fourth place. Goessel defeated Central Christian 25-9, 25-10 and Little River 25-17, 25-20 but lost to Hesston 25-23, 25-15, Hillsboro 25-18, 25-9 and Halstead 31-29, 26-24. The match against Hillsboro was in the third-fourth place match. … The Goessel cross country teams ran at the Berean Academy Invitational on Thursday where the boys finished in 8th place with 194 points but the girls did not earn a valid team score. … The Bluebird football team picked up an 82-50 win over Tescott in district play this past Friday night and will look to keep the winning alive this Friday night when they play at Salina’s St. John’s Military School.
Peabody Burns
The Lady Warrior volleyball team traveled to McPherson Tuesday evening for a Wheat State triangular with Elyria Christian and Solomon and swept the two matches, defeating Solomon 25-16, 25-21 and the Lady Eagles of Elyria Christian 25-22, 25-16. … The Warrior football team picked up an overall, district and Wheat State win this past Friday night when they defeated Centre 62-28. The Warriors will look to keep the winning alive this Friday night when they play at Hartfield.
Elyria Christian
The Lady Eagle volleyball team played host to a Wheat State triangular on Tuesday evening and went 1-1 in the two matches. The Lady Eagles beat Solomon 25-23, 25-21 but lost to Peabody Burns 25-22, 25-16.
