It is still not even half way through the season, and even shorter than that in district play, but as things stand in 8-man football, the Wheat State League currently have two teams in ties atop their respective divisions and the two teams (Solomon and Little River) that are currently atop the 2012 Wheat State standings have yet to begin district play.

Peabody Burns is 1-0 in 8-man I District 3 while Goessel is 2-0 and sits alone atop the 8-man II District 2 standings.

Solomon and Little River are both in 8-man I District 5, which will have its first week of action this Friday night. Both Solomon and Little River sit atop the Wheat State standings with identical 4-0 records. They are only two of the six District 5 teams that are still undefeated on the season.

Solomon will play host to Little River on Oct. 12.

Solomon

The Lady Gorilla volleyball team played a triangular at Goessel on Tuesday, but fell in both matches. The Lady Gorillas dropped a 25-13, 25-7 contest to Goessel and then fell 26-24, 25-13 to Little River. The Lady Gorllas also played host to a quad on Thursday where they went 1-2 on the evening, defeating Chapman 24-26, 25-19, 25-19 but  falling to Hope 25-20, 25-16 and to Herington 25-7, 25-16. On Saturday the Lady Gorillas went 1-2 at the Herington Invitational, defeating Wakefield 25-16, 25-14 but falling to Herington 25-16, 25-11 and to Wichita Sunrise 25-14, 25-12 … The Bulldogs picked up their fourth straight 45-point mercy rule victory Friday night when they defeated Sylvan-Lucas 46-0. The Gorillas begin district play this Friday night and will look to remain undefeated when they play host to Lincoln.

Hope

The Lady Lion volleyball team played a Wheat State triangular at White City Tuesday night and split the two matches, defeating White City 25-22, 21-25, 25-23, but falling to Elyria Christian 25-19, 25-18. The Lady Lions also played at the Solomon Quad on Thursday where they went 1-2 on the night, defeating Solomon 25-20, 25-16 but falling to Herington 25-22, 25-11 and also to Chapman 25-17, 25-13.… The Lions picked up their first win of the year Friday night, it was a district and a Wheat State win, as they defeated White City 48-44. The Lions will look to keep the winning alive this Friday night when they play at Wichita Word of Life High School.

Wakefield

The Lady Bomber volleyball team played a Wheat State triangular on Tuesday at Peabody Burns, but lost both matches, falling to Centre 25-9, 25-13 and to Peabody Burns 25-12, 25-10. Saturday the Lady Bombers traveled to Herington for an Invitational tournament and went 0-3 on the day, falling 25-9, 25-6 to Herington, 25-18, 25-10 to Wichita Sunrise and 25-16, 25-14 to Solomon … The Wakefield cross country teams ran at Republic County on Thursday where the Bomber boys finished in fifth place with 110 points but the Lady Bombers did not have enough runners to earn a valid team score. … The Bombers suffered their second straight loss Friday night when they dropped a 50-40 loss to Osborne in district play. This Friday night Wakeifeld  will play host to Linn.

Little River

The Lady Redskin volleyball team played in a triangular at Goessel on Tuesday where they went 1-1, defeating Solomon 26-24, 25-13 but falling the Goessel 25-10, 25-10. The Lady Redskins then placed seventh on Saturday at the Lyons Invitational where they posted a 1-4 record as they went 0-3 in pool play, losing 25-17, 25-13 to Southeast of Saline, 25-11, 25-18 to Pratt and 21-25, 25-23, 25-23 to Otis-Bison, the Lady Redskins then fell 25-20, 25-11 to Lyons in cross-bracketing play but finished the day off with their only a win, a 25-18, 25-21 win over Otis-Bison in the 7th-8th place match. … The Redskin football team remained undefeated on the season Friday night when they handed Hutchinson Central Christian High School a 72-28 defeat. The Redskins will look to remain undefeated this Friday night when they begin district play at Pretty Prairie.

White City

The Lady Huskies volleyball team played host to a Wheat State triangular with Hope and Elyria Christian Tuesday evening, but dropped both matches, falling 25-23, 25-23 to Hope and 25-23, 14-25, 25-23 to Elyria Christian. Saturday the Lady Huskies traveled to Herington to play in an Invitational tournament where they went 0-3 on the day. White City lost 25-19, 25-18 to Council Grove, 25-16, 25-8 to Salina Sacred Heart and 25-20, 25-15 to Centre.… The Huskies football team suffered its fourth loss of the season Friday night, all four losses coming at the hands of fellow Wheat State foes, as they dropped a 48-44 contest to Hope High School. The Huskies will look for their first win of 2012 this Friday night when they play host to Southern Cloud High School.

Centre

The Lady Cougar volleyball team played a Wheat State triangular at Peabody-Burns Tuesday evening and came away with a sweep as they defeated Peabody-Burns 25-15, 25-12 and also beat Wakefield 25-9. 25-13. On Saturday the Lady Cougars went 1-2 in the Herington Invitational as they beat  White City 25-20, 25-15 but lost to Council Grove 25-14, 25-21 and to Salina Sacred Heart 21-25, 25-23, 25-12 … The Cougar football team picked up its second win of the season Friday night when they handed Burlingame a 64-22 defeat. Centre will look to keep the winning alive this Friday night when it plays at Peabody-Burns.

Goessel

The Lady Bluebird volleyball team played host to a Wheat State triangular on Tuesday evening where they won both matches, improving their seasonal record to 12-2 in 2012. The Lady Bluebirds defeated Solomon 25-13, 25-7 and Little River 25-10, 25-10. Saturday the Lady Bluebirds played in the Olpe Tournament and came away with a 2-3 record as they beat Marais des Cygnes 25-7, 25-21 and Peabody Burns 25-15, 25-16, but lost matches to Northern Heights 25-21, 25-15, Wabaunsee 27-25, 25-19 and Olpe 25-23, 25-22. … The Goessel cross country teams ran at the Southeast of Saline Invitational on Tuesday where the Bluebird boys finished in 10th place with 236 points while the Lady Bluebirds did not have enough runners to earn a team score. … The Bluebirds picked up their second district win of the season Friday night when they beat Burrton 58-6. Goessell will look to keep the winning alive this Friday night when it plays at Tescott.

Peabody Burns

The Lady Warrior volleyball team played host to a Wheat State triangular Tuesday evening and split the two matches. The Lady Warriors lost to Centre 25-15, 25-12 but beat Wakefield 25-12, 25-10. … The Warrior football team got back on the winning side of things Friday night when they handed Canton-Galva a 38-8 defeat in their district opener. The Warriors will look to keep the winning alive this Friday night when they get back into Wheat State play by playing host to Centre High School.

Elyria Christian

The Elyria Christian volleyball team swept two Wheat State matches at White City Tuesday evening, defeating Hope 25-19, 25-18 and then topping White City 25-23, 14-25, 25-23. … The Elyria cross country teams also ran at Southeast of Saline, neither squad had enough runners to earn team scores but Moriah Redenbaugh did finish in the top 25 individually for Elyria Christian to earn herself an individual medal.
