The Solomon Gorillas and Little River Redskins took another step towards claiming the 2012 Wheat State football championship this past week as they are the only two Wheat State teams still undefeated on the young season.

The Redskins beat Peabody-Burns 34-32 to stay undefeated on the season while the Gorillas earned their second straight 45-point victory of the season Friday with a 57-8 win over White City.

Solomon will play host to Little River in the seventh week of the season, Oct. 12.

White City, Hope and Goessel are still looking for their first football wins of the season. White City, for the second week in a row, will play on the field of a Wheat State leader as they play at Little River Friday night while Hope and Goessel will stay out of Wheat State play looking for their first win.

Solomon

The Solomon volleyball team was busy this past week as they opened Wheat State play on Tuesday with a triangular hosting White City and Wakefield where they won both matches, defeating Wakefield 25-12, 18-25, 25-11 and knocking off White City 25-16, 24-26, 25-18 and on Saturday the Lady Gorillas hosted a tournament where they went 1-3. … The Gorilla football team remained undefeated on the season with a 57-8 win over White City and will look to stay undefeated on the season this Friday night when they play at Wakefield for their first road game of the season.

Hope

The Lady Lion volleyball team suffered two more losses Tuesday evening at Little River as they dropped a 25-19, 25-22 defeat at the hands of the Lady Redskins and a 25-17, 25-21 loss to Peabody Burns. The Lady Lions played in the Centre Tournament on Saturday where they went 0-3 on the day. … The Lion football team remained winless on the young season Friday night when they lost a 50-42 contest against Frankfort. The Lions will look for that first win this Friday when they play at Chase.

Wakefield

The Lady Bomber volleyball team played in a Wheat State triangular at Solomon Tuesday night where they split their two matches, defeating White City 25-19, 25-15 but lost to Solomon 25-12, 18-25, 25-11 and the Lady Bombers played in the tournament in Solomon on Saturday where they went 0-3 on the day. … The Wakefield cross country teams ran at the Washington County Invitational on Thursday where the boys placed second with 78 points while the Lady Bombers did not have enough runners to field a team score. … The Bomber football team picked up its first win of the young season Friday night when they beat Centre 58-14 and will play host to Solomon this Friday night.

Little River

The Lady Redskins played host to a Wheat State triangular Tuesday evening with Hope and Peabody Burns and went 1-1 on the night with a 25-19, 25-22 win over Hope but a 25-21, 12-25, 25-20 loss to Peabody Burns. The win over Hope was Little Rivr’s first volleyball victory of the season and the Lady Redskins took that first win into action on Saturday at the Centre Invitational and went 1-2 on the day. …  The Redskin football team remained undefeated on the season Friday night with a 34-32 win over Peabody Burns and will look to keep the winning alive this Friday night when they play host to White City.

White City

The Lady Huskies volleyball team got back into action Tuesday night when they played a Wheat State triangular in Solomon but lost both matches, falling 25-19, 25-15 to Wakefield and falling 25-16, 24-26, 25-18 and also played in the Centre tournament on Saturday where they went 0-3 on the day. … The Huskies football team fell to 0-2 on the young season Friday night when they dropped a 57-8 contest to Solomon and will look for their first win of the season this Friday night when they play at Little River.

Centre

The Lady Cougar volleyball team played host to Goessel and Elyria Christian Tuesday evening in a Wheat State triangular where Centre went 1-1 the Lady Cougars also hosted a tournament on Saturday where they went 2-3 on the day and placed fourth. … Th Cougar football team fell to 1-1 on the season this past Friday night when they dropped a 58-14 contest to Wakefield and will get back on the grid-iron this Friday night when they play at Lebo.

Goessel

The Lady  Bluebird volleyball team played in a triangular at Centre Tuesday evening where they won both of their matches, knocking off Elyria Christian 25-11 and 25-11 as well as beating the home-standing Lady Cougars 25-20, 25-19 the Lady Bluebirds also hosted a tournament on Saturday where they went 4-1 and placed second, falling to Sedgwick 25-17, 25-23 in the championship match … The Goessel cross country teams ran at Hesston on Thursday with the Bluebird boys finished in 14th place with 97 points while the Goessel girls finished 15th with 58 points. … The Bluebird football teeam dropped a 76-56 game to Canton-Galva this past Friday night and will look for their first win of the season this Friday night when they play at Southern Cloud.

Peabody Burns

The Lady Warrior volleyball team was in action on Tuesday in a Wheat State triangular at Little River where they beat the Lady Redskins 25-21, 12-25, 25-20 and also defeated the Lady Lions of Hope 25-17, 25-21 and took their 5-2 record into action on Saturday at the Solomon Tournament where they went 3-2 in the tournament. … The Warrior football team dropped a 2-point loss, 34-32, to Little River this past Friday night to see their record drop to 1-1 on the young season and will look to get back on the winning end of things this Friday night when they play at Burlingame.

Elyria Christian

The Lady Eagle volleyball team played a triangular at Centre Tuesday evening but they lost both matches as they fell to Centre 25-20, 25-19 and then dropped a 25-11, 25-11 contest to the Lady Bluebirds the Lady Eagles were also in action Saturday at the Solomon tournament where they went 3-1 in the tournament and lost 25-16, 17-25, 25-19 to Inman in the championship match. … The Elyria Christian cross country teams made their season and school debut on Thursday at Pratt Skyline. The Eagles and Lady Eagles didn’t have enough runners to earn team points but freshman Moriah Redenbaugh did earn 15th place individually which earned her an individual medal. The Elyria runners will next run at Bennington on Thursday.
