There is a lot of optimism around West girls swimming this year.

“West has many swimmers that are new to the sport of swimming. They are so excited to learn the techniques of all the strokes. The girls have a lot of heart and I can’t wait to watch them grow and improve,” said coach Emily McCullough

Emily McCullough will be coaching the West High Girls swim team for the third season. Last year West had a small team. The team was scratching at some events just because they didn’t have enough swimmers, but this year will be different. Last year the team focused on beating their own personal records. This may not have translated into many team wins, but improving yourself is improving the team.

West will have four returning swimmers.

Senior Ashley Porter will be swimming free, sophomore Alayna Lewis at the breast stroke, sophomore Zandra Floyd swimming the fly and junior Kelly Churchill doing the back stroke. West will also have over ten first time swimmers.

“We’ve grown a lot this year,” said Porter. “We’re working very hard building up our team and I hope the strength we build now will carry us through the future.”

West will host the first swim meet of the year on Thursday, Mar. 29 starting at 4:15.The Pioneers will take on the North High Redskins.
