The Valley Center High School boys soccer team is looking for a fresh start this fall after finishing last season 4-13 overall.
The Hornets have a new head coach, Jeff Burger, who led the girls soccer team last year. The squad also features a senior trio with varsity experience.
Jason DeGarmo earned Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League honors in Division II last year as a midfielder. John McCune received all-league honorable mention as a goalkeeper. Dylan Powell rounds out the list of key veterans.
Valley Center had one representative on the all-league first team, defender Eduardo Juanes, who was a senior last season.
The Hornets ended their 2011 season with a loss to Goddard Eisenhower in the first round of Class 5A regional competition. Burger said his players’ goals this fall are to become competitive in every game, challenge the favorites for league contention and build a successful foundation for the future.
In addition to the senior core, Burger will look for contributions from the following athletes: freshmen Nathan Eckert, Jordan Gomez-Nix and Ethan Hogan; juniors Adam Shannon and Ethan Hailey; and senior David Chandler.
Valley Center traveled to Newton for its season debut Monday, Aug. 27. The boys fell to the Railers 4-0.
In their home opener the following day, the Hornets succumbed to Maize, a Class 6A state quarterfinalist in 2011. The score was 8-0 Tuesday.
The boys will face Derby on Thursday. That game will be in Valley Center.
