St. James Academy is the Class 4A All-Sports Champion for the 2010-11 athletic year.

The Thunder won three team titles to help nip rival and two-time defending champion Topeka Hayden by 2.5 points. Andale finished third with 36.5 points.

St. James started the athletic year off with a big bang in volleyball. The Thunder won their third-consecutive title in Class 4A, but the accolades did not stop there. Prepvolleyball.com ranked the Thunder as the No. 1 team in nation at the end of the season. Its star player Hanna Forst was also named First Team All-American and the Gatorade Player of the Year for Kansas. Forst is heading to South Carolina next year.

Boys soccer took an overtime loss in the semifinals of state to eventual champion Wichita Trinity. The Thunder came back and beat Bonner Springs in the third-place game to take home a trophy.

Also in the spring, the girls tennis team finished tied for sixth thanks in large part to Bree Honer’s singles title.

In the winter, the wrestling program carried the banner for the St. James athletic program with a fourth-place finish at state. Taylor Moeder and Ryne Cokeley won individual titles at 140 and 152 pounds to lead the way. Zach Pollom took second at 171 pounds and Rory Haugh was the only other placer with a fifth-place finish at 160 pounds.

In the spring, St. James got back to the top of the podium in baseball and girls soccer. The Baseball team came into the tournament as a No. 3 seed with an 18-5 record and proceeded to cruise to the title. St. James outscored opponents 28-4 in three games at state.

The girls soccer team came into the state tournament with a lackluster 8-8-1 record, but proved that record is not everything with wins of 2-1 and 1-0 to take home the state title.

Softball ran into a buzz saw named Sydnee Eck as the Thunder lost 2-0 in the championship to Andale/Garden Plain to take second and round out St. James’ scoring on the season.

How we scored it: We awarded points to the top eight team finishers at the state championships in every sport. Eight points went to the champion, seven to the runner-up, six to the third-place team and so on, down to one point for eighth place.

In the event of ties, we split the points. In sports that did not have contests to decide all places, such as football, we split third-place points among the semifinal losers and split the points for fifth through eighth places among the quarterfinal losers.
