The Pretty Prairie boys basketball team outscored Heart of the Plains League rival Attica in three of four quarters on Tuesday evening. Playing frantically throughout the third quarter, the home team nearly gave the lead away to Attica before pulling away from Attica 16-6 in the final stanza.

And while it may have appeared on paper that Pretty Prairie was in total control during the remaining periods of the game, Bulldog head coach Dennis Detter doesn’t quite agree.

“I didn’t feel like any of our quarters were good. I didn’t feel like we were there mentally,” said Detter. “We just made a lot of mistakes. We missed some easy buckets. Our shooting percentage was really great, but it should have been even better.”

“Turnovers were atrocious, and again that’s mental. These kids have been playing too long for that. We shouldn’t be having those mistakes.”

Stetson Broce, a 6-5 senior, caused some match-up problems early on for the Attica squad whose tallest players on the roster measure at 6-0. Broce poured in 14 points in the first half, including a pair of dunks.

“We didn’t go to him as much as we should have in the second half, but early on, he was just a load. He just caused them a lot of problems,” said Detter.

Pretty Prairie was just as effective offensively in the third quarter, scoring ten, but defensively it was another story, as they allowed Attica to score 13 points.

But the Red and Blue put away Attica in the fourth quarter with a 46-34 advantage to close the game.

Broce led the Bulldogs in scoring with 25. Seniors Broce, Trey Tallant and Jacob Welker accounted for all but four of Pretty Prairie’s points.

Senior Vince Ramirez paced Attica as the only player to reach double figures. He tallied ten.
