Olathe East is the Class 6A All-Sports Award winner for the 2011-12 athletic year. The Hawks scored 67.5 points, six ahead of second-place BV North. SM East took third with 53.5 points and half of a point is all that separated Maize and Washburn Rural for the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
This is the Hawks' third all-sports award in a row and fourth overall. The school won the award in 2008.
The Hawks turned in strong performances in every season as 13 of the possible 21 teams finished in the top eight in the state. Olathe East started the year on the right foot as its football and volleyball teams made it to the semifinals of its respective state tournaments. The Lady Hawks cross country team finished third at state and East’s boys’ soccer team lost in the quarterfinals.
The Hawks football team steamrolled Olathe Northwest and SM West by a combined score of 86-39 in the first two games of the 6A state tournament, but lost to the eventual state champion Olathe South in the semifinals.
The story for the its volleyball team read much the same way as its football counterparts as the Lady Hawks played its way to the semifinals by defeating BV West and Maize, but fell to the eventual state champion Washburn Rural in the semifinals, then lost again to Gardner-Edgerton to take fourth-best in the state.
The girls’ cross country team, which is made up of many of the track stars took third in the state and went on to win its fifth state championship in a row.
The Lady Hawks’ fifth straight state title was just part of East’s unbelievable spring season, where it won state championships like it was going out of style. Softball, girls’ track and girls’ soccer all won state titles. Its boys’ track team took second at the state meet while girls’ swim and boys’ golf took fourth and fifth in the state, respectively.
The Lady Hawks girls’ track team not only won the title, it dominated for it. The team scored 69.5 points at the meet, 18.5 ahead of second-place Lawrence Free State.
The East softball team allowed just two runs through the entire state tournament, a span of three games where the Lady Hawks outscored opponents 25-2. They finished the season at 24-1.
In the winter, boys’ basketball made the state tournament, boys’ swimming and diving took fifth place and the boys’ bowling team took home seventh place.
How we scored it: We awarded points to the top eight team finishers at the state championships in every sport. Eight points went to the champion, seven to the runner-up, six to the third-place team and so on, down to one point for eighth place.
In the event of ties, we split the points. In sports that did not have contests to decide all places, such as football, we split third-place points among the semifinal losers and split the points for fifth through eighth places among the quarterfinal losers.
