The North Central Kansas League got its first glimpse of the 2012 campaign this past week when Wamego picked up the first NCKL win of the young year with a 40-24 victory over Marysville.

This week the NCKL will get into full swing as all six teams will play NCKL contests with Clay Center playing host to Abilene, Wamego playing host to Concordia and Marysville playing host to Chapman.

The opening week of the 2012 season did not treat the NCKL very well as only Clay Center picked up a victory. The second week, however, was much better as four of the NCKL schools earned victories with only Marysville and Abilene still seeing the big goose egg in the wins column at this point of the year.

Concordia

The Lady Panther golfers placed 11th at the Salina Central Invitational on Tuesday with a team score of 221. … The Lady Panther tennis team placed seventh at the Smoky Valley Invitational on Tuesday with 11 points. … The Lady Panther volleyball team went 4-1 on Saturday at the Southeast of Saline Invitational, qualifying for the championship match. But the Lady Panthers fell 25-19, 25-22 to Abilene in the championship match. … The Concordia cross country teams ran at Wamego on Saturday where the Panther boys finished ninth with 281 points while the Lady Panthers finished fifth with 143 points. … The Panther football team picked up its first win of the season Friday night when it beat Wellington 52-20 and the Panthers will open NCKL play this Friday night when they play at Wamego.

Abilene

The Cowgirl volleyball team picked up a sweep of their intra-county rival, Chapman, Tuesday night, winning the opening match 25-10, 25-21 and then completing the sweep with a 25-9, 25-14 win in the second match, the Cowgirls also competed in the Southeast of Saline tournament on Saturday where they won all four of their matches, including a 25-19, 25-22 win over Concordia in the championship match. … The Cowgirl tennis team played at the Smoky Valley Invitational on Thursday where they finished in fifth place with 41 points. … The Abilene cross country teams ran at Wamego on Saturday where the Cowboys finished 16th with 369 points while the Cowgirls finished 12th with 275 points. … The Cowboy football team is still searching for its first win of the young season as it dropped a 14-7 contest to Rossville on Friday night. The Cowboys, the two-time defending NCKL champion, will look for that first win this Friday night when they play at Clay Center.

Clay Center

The Lady Tiger golfers played at the Salina Central Invitational on Tuesday where they shot a 218 to place ninth. … The Clay Center cross country teams ran at Wamego on Saturday where the Lady Tigers finished 10th with 239 points while the Tiger boys were 7th with 196 points. … The Tiger football team is the lone NCKL team still undefeated on the season as the Tigers picked up their second win of the season Friday night when they defeated Hays Thomas More Prep 28-7. The Tigers will look to keep the winning alive this Friday night when they play host to the Abilene Cowboys.

Marysville

The Marysville cross country teams ran at Wamego on Saturday where the Marysville boys finished 14th in the lower classification race with 348 points while the Lady Bulldogs did not have enough runners to compile a team score. … The Bulldog football team is still searching for its first win of the young season after seeing their latest attempt go by the wayside Friday night when they fell 40-24 to NCKL rival Wamego. The Bulldogs will look for that first win this Friday night when they play host to Chapman.

Wamego

The Wamego cross country teams served as host to a meet on Saturday where the boys won the meet with 71 points while the Lady Raiders finished sixth with 167 points. … The Red Raider football team got a quick lead over the remainder of the NCKL football teams when they opened NCKL play Friday night with a 40-24 win over Marysville. The Red Raiders will look to keep their winning alive this Friday night when they play host to Concordia.

Chapman

The Lady Irish volleyball team suffered its third and fourth losses of the young season Tuesday night when they got swept by arch-rival Abilene in a pair of matches. Abilene won the opener 25-10, 25-21 and Chapman dropped the second match 25-9, 25-14. … The Lady Irish tennis team competed at the Smoky Valley Invitational on Thursday where they finished in second place with 74 points. … The Fighting Irish football team kissed a 25-game losing streak goodbye on Friday night when they only gave up a safety at Southeast of Saline and handed the Trojans a 14-2 defeat. The Fighting Irish will look to keep the winning alive this Friday night when they open NCKL play in 2012 with a game at Marysville.
