The 2012 football opening did not treat the North Central Kansas League very well this past Friday night as the NCKL posted a 1-5 record with the Clay Center earning the only victory by an NCKL team and as a league the six schools were outscored 200-106.

The Tigers beat Riley County 33-26 while Concordia fell to Beloit, Wamego lost to Rock Creek, Marysville lost to Winfield, Abilene fell to Scott City and Chapman lost to Rossville.

This week, however, the NCKL action gets started as Wamego plays host to Marysville in the first NCKL game of the 2012 season. Abilene is the three-year defending NCKL champion.

Around the NCKL this past week, however, there was plenty of sports action at all six schools in multiple different sports:

Concordia

The Lady Panther golf team began its season on Tuesday by hosting an invitational golf meet where it placed second with a team score of 450. The Concordia golf team will return to the course on Tuesday when they play in the Salina Central Invitational. … The Lady Panther tennis team finally got its season underway on Tuesday as it placed third in the Ellsworth tournament with 42 points. The Lady Panthers also got on the court on Thursday at Chapman where they finished in fourth place in the quad. … The Lady Panther volleyball team opened its season at the Abilene Quad on Thursday where they went 2-1, defeating Hays TMP 25-9, 25-5 and Smoky Valley 25-18, 25-12, but falling to Abilene 22-25, 25-22, 25-23. … The Concordia cross country teams hosted an invitational on Thursday, which served as their season-opener and the Lady Panthers won the meet with 37 points while the Panther boys finished in fourth place with 57 points. … The Panther football team opened the 2012 season with a 50-8 loss to Beloit and will look to pick up its first win of the season this coming Friday night when they play host to Wellington.

Abilene

The Abilene cross country teams opened their season on Thursday by hosting an invitational where the Cowgirls finished third with 72 points while the Cowboys also finished third but with 98 points. … The Cowgirl volleyball team opened its season with a quad on Thursday night where they went 3-0, defeating Hays TMP 25-4, 25-9, Smokky Valley 30-28, 25-20 and NCKL rival Concordia 22-25, 25-22, 25-23. … The Cowgirl tennis team played in the Chapman Quad on Thursday where they scored 7 points and finished in third place. … The Cowboy football team opened the 2012 season with a 51-20 defeat at the hands of Scott City and the Cowboys will look to turn that around this Friday night when they play at Rossville.

Clay Center

The Lady Tiger volleyball team played a triangular at Minneapolis on Tuesday where they went 1-1 after they defeated Minneapolis 25-15, 18-25, 25-12 in the opening match of the evening, but fell to Southeast of Saline 25-23, 25-17 in the middle match. The Lady Tigers are off until this Tuesday when they play at Wamego. … The Lady Tiger golf team began its season on Tuesday by shooting a 465 at the Concordia Invitational, which was good enough to place it third as a team. The Lady Tigers will return to the course on Tuesday when they play at the Salina Central Invitational. … The Clay Center cross country teams ran at Concordia on Thursday where the Clay Center boys finished in second place with 56 points and the Lady Tigers finished third with 65 points. … The Tiger football team was the only NCKL school to open the football season with a win as the Tigers defeated Riley County 33-26 and the Tigers will look to keep that winning alive this Friday night when they play at Hays Thomas More Prep.

Marysville

The Marysville girls’ tennis team got into action on Thursday with the Salina Central Quad, where the finished in third place with five points. … The Lady Bulldog volleyball team opened its season Thursday night when they played at Riley County and lost both matches. Marysville lost the opener 25-22, 25-14 and fell in the nightcap 20-16, 23-25, 25-15. … The Bulldog football team opened its 2012 season with a 43-6 loss at the hands of Winfield and will look to get back on the winning ways this Friday night when they open the 2012 NCKL season at Wamego. … The Marysville cross country teams hosted a meet on Saturday where the Bulldog boys placed eighth with 166 points but the Lady Bulldogs did not have enough runners to earn a team score.

Wamego

The Lady Raider volleyball team remains undefeated on the season, Wamego is 5-0 so far this season, after sweeping through a triangular at Royal Valley High School on Tuesday. The Lady Raiders defeated Royal Valley and also Rock Creek. Now the Lady Raiders will get into NCKL competition as they play host to Clay Center in the NCKL opener for both schools this coming Tuesday night. … The Lady Raider tennis team won the Chapman Quad on Thursday with 25 points. … The Wamego cross country teams ran at Manhattan on Saturday where the Rauder boys finished in second place with 57 points while the Lady Raiders finished in sixth place with 133 points. … The Raider football team opened its season Friday night with a 28-27 loss to Rock Creek and next Friday night the Red Raiders will open the 2012 North Central Kansas League season when they play host to Marysville.

Chapman

The Lady Irish volleyball team opened its season Tuesday with a triangular at Wabaunsee where it went 0-2, falling 25-14, 25-21 to Riley County and 25-21, 25-9 to Alma-Wabaunsee.  The Lady Irish are scheduled to return to the court next Tuesday when they play host to arch-rival Abilene at the Chapman District Gym. … The Chapman cross country teams opened their season on Thursday at the Abilene Invitational where the Irish boys finished in fourth place with 98 points while the Chapman girls did not have enough runners to earn a team score. … The Chapman girls’ tennis team played host to a quadrangular on Thursday where they scored 23 points to finish in second place. … The Fighting Irish football team opened the 2012 season at Rossville Friday night where they suffered a 28-12 loss and will look for their first win of the young season this Friday night when they play at Southeast of Saline High School.
