The Kansas State High School Activities Association post season has officially begun around the state, with wrestling conducting its annual regional wrestling tournaments this past weekend and the North Central Activities Association had 19 individual wrestlers qualify for this weekend’s Class 3-2-1A state wrestling tournament at Hays.

The NCAA was competing in three different regionals around the state with Ellsworth, Southeast of Saline and Minneaplis all wrestling at the Garden Plain Regional, Russell grappling at the Norton Regional and Republic County and Beloit both wrestled in the Onaga Regional.

Team wise the NCAA got its best performance from Southeast of Saline at the Garden Plain Regional where the Trojans finished in fourth place with 87 points.

Beloit placed fifth at Onaga, Russell placed ninth at Norton and Minneapolis placed 6th at Garden Plain. Beloit, Russell and Minneapolis shared the 2013 NCAA championship, with each posting 4-1 NCAA dual records and each beating one of the other two.

On the basketball court the Republic County Lady Buffs have secured the 2013 NCAA championship with one game left to play as they stand with an 8-1 record while Ellsworth sits in second place with a 6-4 NCAA record. Republic County will play at Southeast of Saline this Tuesday night to seal up the NCAA title.

That Republic County vs. Southeast of Saline basketball doubleheader Tuesday night will also be big in determining the boys’ NCAA champion as Beloit has already finished its NCAA season with a 9-1 record and sits percentage points ahead of Republic County, who stands with an 8-1 record but the showdown at Southeast of Saline set for Tuesday. If the Buffs top Southeast of Saline, Republic County and Beloit will share with boys’ NCAA title in 2013.

Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart High School does not offer a wrestling program but in basketball the Knights and Lady Knights suffered losses in all four of their games as they were swept by Beloit on Tuesday and by Republic County on Friday. Tuesday night the Lady Knights fell 48-40 and the Knight boys lost 59-48. Friday night the Sacred Heart girls lost 45-23 to Republic County and the Knight boys fell 56-43. Saturday night the Sacred Heart girls were scheduled to play against Hutch Trinity but a score from the game was not reported in.

Minneapolis

The Lion wrestling team had four individuals qualify for next week’s Class 3-2-1A state wrestling tournament in Hays as Justin Klein (160), Garrett Lott (170), Colby Berry (182) and Quentin Clark (195) all placed in the top four of their respective weight classes this past weekend at the Garden Plain Regional. As a team the Lions finished with 69 points which placed them sixth.

On the basketball court the Lions and Lady Lions got swept by Republic County on Tuesday night with the Lady Lions falling 48-40 and the Lion boys falling 50-25 and then got swept by Beloit on Friday with the Lady Lions falling 54-41 and the Lion boys falling 63-33.

Southeast of Saline

The Trojan wrestling team had five individuals qualify for this weekend’s Class 3-2-1A state wrestling tournament in Hays as Jim Weller (120), Zach Turner (126), Cory Knight (132), Kreal Smith (152), Keith Short (160) all placed in the top four of their respective weight classes this past weekend at the Garden Plain Regional tournament and qualified for the Class 3-2-1A state tournament this coming weekend in Hays. As a team the Trojans scored 87 points which was good for fourth place in the regional tournament.

The Southeast of Saline basketball teams split two games with Ellsworth on Tuesday with the Lady Trojans falling 47-34 but the Trojan boys bounced back to pick up a 71-60 victory. The teams then split two games with Russell on Friday with the Lady Trojans falling 48-45 but, once again, the Trojan boys bounced back to pick up a 73-29 victory.

Russell

The Russell High School wrestling team had two individual wrestlers wrestle their way to the Class 3-2-1A state tournament this past weekend at the Norton Regional tournament where the team scored 80 points, which placed them ninth as a team. Individually the Broncos had Regis Weiss (152) and Andrew Ochampaugh (220) both place in the top four of their respective weight classes to qualify for this weekend’s state tournament.

On the basketball court the Broncos and Lady Broncos had Tuesday night off before splitting with Southeast of Saline on Friday night where the Lady Broncos picked up a 45-48 victory but the Bronco boys suffered a 73-29 defeat.

Beloit

The Trojan wrestling team qualified four individuals for this weekend’s Class 3-2-1 State wrestling tournament in Hays. As a team, the Trojans scored 87 points at the Onaga Regional tournament, which placed them fifth. To do that Beloit had Tyler Watts (132), Carter Wessling (138), Tanner Niemczyk (145) and Bowe Behymer (160) all place in the top four of their respective weight classes to earn trips to the state tournament.

In basketball the Trojans and Lady Trojans swept Sacred Heart on Tuesday and also swept Minneapolis on Friday. Tuesday night the Lady Trojans got the sweep started with a 51-47 victory which the Trojan boys followed with a 58-48 victory. Friday night the Lady Trojans, once again, got the sweep started with a 54-41 win while the Trojan boys followed with a 63-33 victory. The Trojan boys finished off their NCAA season with a 9-1 record which ensures them at least a tie for the 2013 NCAA crown.

Ellsworth

Ty Nienke (106), Zach Martin (138) and Mo Rojas (145) each placed in the top four individually at the Garden Plain Regional tournament over this past weekend to qualify for the Class 3-2-1A state tournament in Hays this weekend and help the Ellsworth wrestling team compil 60.5 points and place seventh as a team in the regional tournament.

On the basketball court Ellsworth split with Southeast of Saline on Tuesday night with the boys falling 71-60 but the girls earning a 47-34 victory. Friday night Ellsworth stepped outside of NCAA competition and split with Larned High School with the girls picking up a 58-21 victory but the Bearcat boys not being able to keep the winning going as they fell 54-43.

Republic County

The Buffalo wrestling team competed in the Onaga Regional tournament this past weekend where Brady Lowell (113) lost in the championship match to place second individually which qualified him for this weekend’s Class 3-2-1A state tournament in Hays. As a team the Buffs finished with 25.5 points which placed them 16th.

On the basketball court Republic County swept Minneapolis on Tuesday with the boys winning 50-25 and the girls winning 48-40 and then swept Sacred Heart on Friday with the boys winning 56-43 and the girls winning 45-23.
