The 2012-2013 Winter Season for the North Central Activities Association has gotten off to a quality start as the league went 9-5 in basketball action and 3-1 in wrestling action during the first week.

Minneapolis High School was the only school in the NCAA to not begin basketball action yet, but the Lion wrestling did get off to a quality start by sweeping their two duals at Hillsboro on Thursday evening. The Minneapolis basketball teams will begin play this week in the Tri-County Classic.

Sacred Heart

The Sacred Heart basketball teams started strong Friday night when they swept through a twinbill at Solomon with the Lady Knights opening with a 44-34 win and the Knight boys followed with a 63-57 win. The Sacred Heart teams will be back in action this week when they compete in the Chapman Fighting Irish Classic.

Minneapolis

The Minneapolis Basketball teams will open this week with play in the Tri-County Classic while the wrestling team swept two duals at Hillsboro on Thursday, defeating Hillsboro 58-15 and Halstead 48-18. The Lion wrestlers also placed sixth at Oberlin on Saturday with 73 points.

Southeast of Saline

The Southeast of Saline basketball teams split with Marion on Friday night as the boys lost 61-47, but the girls won their opener 49-16. The Southeast of Saline wrestling team opened the season Friday night against Ellsworth but a score from that dual was not available.

Russell

The Russell High School basketball teams opened their season Friday night by splitting with Ellinwood with the girls’ winning their game 50-35 but the boys fell in their contest by the same score, 50-35. The Russell wrestling team opened its season on Saturday at the Osborne Tournament where it placed fourth with 109 points. This week the Russell basketball teams will be in action when they play host to a tournament.

Beloit

The Beloit basketball teams opened their seasons Friday night by going up against Concordia and split the two games with the Lady Trojans winning 57-48 but the Trojan boys lost 54-41. The Beloit wrestling team opened its season on Thursday with a double dual which it split. The Trojans lost 49-24 to Phillipsburg but defeated Plainville 33-29.

Ellsworth

The Ellsworth basketball teams got swept in their season-opening action Friday night as the Lady Bearcats fell 51-39 to Lyons and the Bearcat boys fell 66-36 to Lyons. The Ellsworth wrestling had two duals last week as they went up against Hays TMP on Thursday and Southeast of Saline on Friday, but results from neither of those duals was available.

Republic County

The Republic County basketball teams got into action on Thursday night when they swept two games from Thayer Central from Nebraska, with the girls winning 43-38 and the boys winning 49-32. The Buffs and Lady buffs were also in action on Saturday, once again playing teams from north of the state border and once again picking up a sweep as they swept Superior, Neb. with the boys winning 82-22 and the girls winning 39-30. The Republic County wrestlers were in action with the Lincoln Round Robin on Saturday, but results from that tournament were not made available.
