SALINA, Kan.—
There are still two North Central Activities Association teams undefeated in football in 2012, but neither of those squads are the current leader in the NCAA standings.Sacred Heart and Beloit remained undefeated on the season, that played its third week this past Friday night, but the Ellsworth Bearcats are currently sitting on top of the NCAA standings, even though the Bearcats have one loss in their first three games.
So Ellsworth sits on top of the standings with a 2-1 overall record, 2-0 NCAA record while Sacred Heart and Beloit are both 3-0 on the season by one half game behind Ellsworth with 1-0 NCAA records.
Sacred Heart
The Lady Knights volleyball team traveled to Ellsworth Tuesday evening for an NCAA doubleheader and lost both matches, falling 23-25, 25-15, 25-22 in the opener and 25-23, 19-25, 25-20 in the second match. The Lady Knights played in the Rossville Invitational on Saturday where they went 2-1 in pool play, defeating El Dorado 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, lost to Wamego 25-18, 25-12 and beat Oskaloosa 25-9, 25-16, which qualified the Lady Knights for the quarterfinal round. But in the quarterfinals, Sacred Heart lost 25-17, 22-25, 25-21 to Ottawa to end the tournament with a 2-2 record. … The Sacred Heart cross country teams ran at Clay Center on Thursday where the Lady Knights won the team title with 60 points and the Sacred Heart boys finished third with 104 points. … The Knight football team remained undefeated on the season Friday night with a 31-28 overtime win over Sedgwick. The Knights will get back into action this Friday night when they play host to Beloit, which is the only other undefeated NCAA team in 2012.
Minneapolis
The Lady Lion volleyball team picked up its first two wins of the season Tuesday evening when they played host to Beloit in an NCAA doubleheader and won the opener 25-23, 29-27 and then completed the sweep with a 25-18, 15-25, 27-25 win in the nightcap. … The Minneapolis cross country teams ran at Clay Center on Thursday where the boys finished in 10th place with 257 points and the Lady Lions did not have enough runners to earn a qualifying team score. … The Lion football team dropped its first game of the season this past Friday night when they fell 39-7 to LaCrosse. The Lions will look to get back on the winning track this Friday night when they play at Southeast of Saline.
Southeast of Saline
The Lady Trojan volleyball team played host to Republic County for a doubleheader Tuesday evening and swept both matches, Southeast of Saline won the opener 25-14, 25-18 and completed the sweep with a 25-16, 25-19 win in the nightcap. … The Southeast of Saline cross country teams ran at Clay Center on Thursday where the Trojan boys finished fourth with 125 points and the Lady Trojans finished fifth with 93 points. … The Trojan football team picked up its second win of the young season Friday night with a 46-8 win over Remington. The Trojans will get back into NCAA play this Friday when they play host to Minneapolis.
Russell
The Lady Bronco golf team played in the Pratt Invitational on Monday and finished in fourth place with a score of 210. The Lady Bronco golfers also played at Larned on Thursday where they finished with a score of 424 to capture the team title. … The Lady Bronco volleyball team played at Smoky Valley Monday evening, but lost both matches, falling 25-13, 25-7 to Smoky Valley and 25-15, 25-23 to Great Bend. … The Bronco football team suffered an 84-0 blanking at the hands of NCAA rival Beloit Friday night and will look to pick up their first victory of the season this Friday when they play at Republic County in a contest pairing two teams still searching for their first win of the season.
Beloit
The Lady Trojan volleyball team traveled to Minneapolis Tuesday evening for an NCAA doubleheader and dropped both matches, as they lost 25-23, 29-27 in the opener and 25-18, 15-25, 27-25 in the second match. … The Beloit cross country teams ran at Smith Center on Thursday where the Trojan boys finished in third place with 70 points while the Lady Trojans did not have enough runners to earn a qualifying team score. … The Trojan football team remained undefeated in convincing fashion Friday night with an 84-0 blanking of Russell. The Trojans will look to keep the winning alive this Friday night in a showdown for the lead in the NCAA in 2012 as they go up against Sacred Heart, which is also still undefeated this season.
Ellsworth
The Lady Bearcat volleyball team played host to Sacred Heart Tuesday evening in an NCAA doubleheader and swept both matches, winning the opener 23-25, 25-15, 25-22 and completing the sweep with a 25-23, 19-25, 25-20 win in the nightcap. … The Lady Bearcat tennis team played host to a meet on Thursday where they finished in second place with 27 points. … The Bearcat football team picked up its second win of the young season this past Friday night with a 49-19 win over Republic County. That win gave Ellsworth two NCAA wins this season. The Bearcats, however, will step outside of NCAA play this Friday night when they play at Hays TMP.
Republic County
The Lady Buffalo volleyball team played a doubleheader at Southeast of Saline Tuesday evening, but dropped both matches, falling 25-14, 25-18 in the opening match and falling 25-16, 25-19 in the second match. … The Republic County cross country teams ran at Smith Center on Thursday where they swept both team titles as the Buffalo boys finished first with 23 points and the Lady Buffs also won the team crown with 18 points. … The Buffalo football team dropped its third game this season, falling 49-19 to Ellsworth. The Buffs will search for that first win this Friday night when they play host to Russell, who is also still searching for its first win of the year.
