Southeast of Saline High School and Minneapolis High School took the first two steps towards claiming the 2012 NCAA football title Friday night as the opened the 2012 football seasons with not only wins, but wins against NCAA foes as Southeast of Saline defeated Republic County 53-0 and Minneapolis defeated Russell 45-0.

Beloit and Sacred Heart both also began the 2012 football campaign with victories, but the Trojan and Knight victories were non-conference games.

Sacred Heart

The Lady Knight volleyball team got its season off in convincing fashion Tuesday night with a three-game sweep of Solomon on the Lady Gorillas’ home court as Sacred Heart won the match 25-17, 25-14, 25-15. The Lady Knight volleyball team will have its home opener this Tuesday night when they play host to Minneapolis. … The Sacred Heart cross country teams opened their season on Thursday at the Abilene Invitational where the Lady Knights won the meet with 27 points while the Knight boys finished second with 49 points. … The Knight football team opened the season Friday night with a 42-6 win over Hutchinson Trinity and will continue their season next Friday night when they play at Republic County.

Minneapolis

The Lady Lion volleyball team got its season underway Tuesday evening by hosting a triangular with Clay Center and Southeast of Saline and lost both matches as they fell to Clay Center 25-15, 18-25, 25-12 and finished the evening by dropping to Southeast of Saline 25-16, 25-22. The Lady Lions also played host to a triangular on Thursday with Hesston and Hutchinson Trinity and also lost both of those matches to fall to 0-4 on the season. Thursday, Minneapolis lost to Hesston 25-16, 25-14 and fell 25-16, 25-14 to Hutch Trinity. … The Minneapolis golf team got its season kicked off on Tuesday when it competed in the Concordia Invitational. The Lady Lions, who also team up with Bennington for its team, did not have enough players to score in the team standings, but did have two individuals score well enough to place in the top 10 individually in the meet. The Minneapolis linksters will next be in action on Tuesday in Salina. … The Minneapolis cross country teams opened their seasons at Lincoln on Thursday where the Lion boys finished second with 91 points while the Lady Lions did not have enough runners to earn a team score. … The Lions football team opened its season Friday night with a 45-0 win over Russell and will look to continue the winning ways this coming Friday when they play at Washington County.

Southeast of Saline

The Lady Trojan volleyball team got on the court Tuesday night in Minneapolis for a triangular where they won both matches as they opened with a 25-23, 25-17 win over Clay Center and closed the evening with a 25-16, 25-22 win over Minneaplis. The Lady Trojans also played at Hillsboro on Thursday where Southeast of Saline went 1-2, beating Marion 25-16, 25-20, but falling to Hillsboro 21-25, 25-18, 25-14 and to Moundridge 23-25, 25-13, 25-20. … The Southeast of Saline cross country teams opened their season at Abilene on Thursday where the Lady Trojans placed 2nd with 34 points and the Trojan boys won the meet with 37 points. … The Trojan football team opened the 2012 season Friday night with a 53-0 win over Republic County and will look to continue the winning ways this Friday night when they play host to Chapman.

Russell

The Russell volleyball team was in action in Beloit on Tuesday where it lost both matches to the Lady Trojans. The Lady Broncos dropped the first match 25-5, 25-12 and lost the second match 25-18, 24-26, 25-17. Russell volleyball is next scheduled to be in action this Tuesday when it plays host to Southeast of Saline. … The Lady Bronco golf team won the Concordia Invitational on Tuesday after firing a score of 398. The Lady Broncos will next be in action on Tuesday when they compete in Salina Central Invitational. … The Lady Bronco tennis team got its season underway on Thursday with the Hays Invitational where they scored 21 points to finish in third place. The Russell netters will return to the courts Tuesday at Phillipsburg. … The Bronco football team opened the 2012 season Friday night with a 45-0 loss against Russell, the Broncos will look for their first win of the young season this Friday night when Russell plays host to Ellsworth. … The Russell cross country teams ran at Hoisington on Saturday.

Beloit

The Beloit volleyball team got its volleyball season started off in winning fashion on its home court Tuesday night as it hosted a doubleheader with Russell and won both matches, 25-5, 25-12 and 25-18, 24-26, 25-17. The Lady Trojan volleyball team is next scheduled to be in action on Tuesday when they play a quadrangular at Smith Center with Red Cloud, Neb. and Republic County. … The Lady Trojan tennis team competed in the Phillipsburg Quad on Tuesday where it finished in fourth place with eight points. The Lady Trojans are scheduled to compete at Republic County next Thursday. … The Trojan football team opened the 2012 season with a 50-8 win over Concordia on Friday night and will play host to Smith Center this Friday night.

Ellsworth

The Lady Bearcat volleyball team played at Republic County Tuesday evening but lost both matches against the Lady Buffalos. Ellsworth dropped the first match against Republic County 24-26, 25-20, 26-24 and fell in the nightcap 25-23, 25-12. Ellsworth volleyball had its home opening matches on Thursday against Ellinwood and Sterling the Lady Bearcats went 1-1 in their home-opening triangular, falling to Sterling 25-18, 14-25, 25-16 but bouncing back to defeat Ellinwood 25-19, 25-11. … The Lady Bearcat tennis team played host to a tournament on Tuesday where it placed fourth with 41 points. The Lady Bearcats will not be in action again until Sept. 13 when they also host another home meet. … The Bearcat football team opened the 2012 season Friday night when they dropped a 27-25 contest to Larned and will look for their first win of the young season this Friday night when they play at Russell.

Republic County

The Repbulic County volleyball team got its season kicked off in strong fashion Tuesday evening by sweeping a pair of matches from visiting Ellsworth. The Lady Buffs won the opener 24-26, 25-20, 26-24 and completed the sweep with a 25-23, 25-12 win in the nightcap. The Lady Buffs return to the court this Tuesday when they play a quadrangular at Smith Center with Red Cloud and Beloit. … The Republic County cross country teams ran at Concordia on Thursday where the boys squad finished in third place with 57 points while the Republic County girls were fourth with 69 points. … The Republic County football team opened the 2012 season on Friday night when they dropped a 53-0 contest to Southeast of Saline and will look to turn things around this Friday night when they play host to Sacred Heart.
