For the second year in a row, Maize South’s assistant coach Ted Gibson took a dip in the El Dorado pool.
The Mavericks won the AVCTL Div. II, III & IV swim championship again and set some new league records along the way. The Mavericks finished with a tally of 487 points, 177 ahead of Collegiate, who finished in second with 310 points. Winfield rounded out the top three with 289 points.
Of the seven league records set on Saturday, Maize South was responsible for three of them. First was the opening event of the 200-yard medley relay, where Jonathon Lavelle, Greyson Heckman, Jacob Evraets and Caleb Peterson tore the old record to pieces. The relay team won in 1:44.07, breaking a five-year-old record of 1:46.84, set by Newton in 2008.

Evraets then faced off against Collegiate’s Sam Horner in the 500-yard freestyle. Horner set the league record in the event in 2011, and was fully prepared to defend it. Evraets had other plans, though. In a time of 5:19.75, he won the 500 freestyle medal almost 11 full seconds ahead of Horner, who finished in 5:30.07.
Then the same 200-yard medley relay for Maize South won the 200-yard free relay more than a second of second place Collegiate, a team consisting of Jake Barrett, Jack Naron, Horner and Rhys Powell. Maize South won with a time of 1:34.26, breaking Newton’s record of 1:34.36 set in 2007.

Winifield’s Keiser Witte had quite the day, too. The University of Missouri-commit broke two records, one of which was his own.
He shattered the year-old record in the 100-yard freestyle set by Derrick Goodson of McPherson with a time of 46.79. The old record of 49.78, nearly three seconds slower.
“I had really good competition in the 100 (freestyle),” said Witte. “In the 50 (freestyle), I was excited to see how I would set up for state next week. I haven’t tapered, I haven’t shaved and I wasn’t wearing a race suit.”
The 50-yard freestyle was a show of strength for Witte. He dominated the race and set a new league record in the process. It was his old record he broke by a full second. He obliterated his 2011 time with a 21.38-second 50-yard freestyle.
“Even if you don’t want to, you have to train every day,” he said. “You have to train to get that one time.”
McPherson’s Goodson turned in a splendid performance in the 200-yard Individual Medley as he set a record in 2:07.31. Horner of Collegiate also set a record in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.68, breaking Witte’s three-year-old record of 1:55.67.
The Collegiate 400-yard freestyle relay team of Barrett, Horner, Powell and Trent Pirner took top honors in the event with a time of 3:37.13.
Maize South’s Lavelle won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 57.01 second. Collegiate’s Barrett took second in 1:00.68.
