ABILENE, Kan.—
Abilene and Chapman High School’s basketball teams met up Tuesday night to renew their Dickinson County rivalry and bring an end to the 2011-2012 regular seasons for each squad.Abilene won both boys and girls games against Chapman.
The Cowboys, meanwhile, were looking to remain undefeated. Abilene did just that as they defeated Chapman 84-55 to end the NCKL season with an unblemished 10-0 record.
"We just have better athletes than they do," Abilene coach Terry Taylor said. "Our kids played hard and we kept running in fresh bodies and they got tired. We kind of wore them down as the game went on."
With the exception of the boys tied 8-8 early on, Abilene led from beginning to end in both the girls and boys games.
The Cowgirls started its game with the first four points and led 12-7 after one quarter. The Cowgirls outscored Chapman 19-11 in the second quarter to take a 31-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Abilene then outscored Chapman 24-20 in the second half to seal the 17-point victory.
The Cowgirls were led in scoring by Kiley Crider, who finished with 17 points while Karina Anderson added 12 for Abilene, which finishes the regular season with a 12-8 record and third in the NCKL with a 6-4 mark. Chapman finishes its regular season 2-18 overall and 0-10 in the NCKL.
"I think both teams came out wanting to win and get a win to finish the regular season," Abilene girls coach Janelle Geist said. "Our athleticism had the edge over theirs. Chapman did a good job at countering our presses and they had an answer to that. We made some transition baskets and got the win."
On the boys side, Abilene scored the first four points of the game and led 8-4 when Chapman ran off 4 straight points to knot the game 8-8.
The Cowboys outscored Chapman 76-47 the remainder of the win to earn a 29-point victory.
The Cowboys, after the 8-8 tie, outscored Chapman 15-7 to close the first quarter and take a 23-15 lead into the second quarter.
Abilene outscored Chapman in all four quarter of the game, 19-11 in the second quarter, 21-14 in the third period and 21-15 in the final stanza for the 84-55 victory.
Abilene, finishes the season 19-1 overall and 10-0 in the NCKL and is the No. 1 seed in next week’s Holton sub-state. The Cowboys were led in scoring by Andy Wilson’s 22 points while Adrian Polk added 18 and Cody Lang pitched in 14.
Chapman finishes the season 10-10 overall and 3-7 in the NCKL, was led by Jordan Bauman’s 15 points while Trey Schultz added 13 and Trent Langvardt pitched in 11.
"We feel pretty good right now," Taylor said of the Holton sub-state. "We are 19-1 and seeded No. 1 in sub-state. We have as good of a chance to win it as anybody else. Obviously, we have to win three games just like anybody else but I like our chances."
