A balmy May afternoon was the backdrop for the 2012 boys’ 5A regional golf tournament in Salina.

The tourney played at Salina Municipal Golf Course saw Newton, Salina Central, Hays, Great Bend, Salina South, Valley Center and Liberal all compete in action.

Newton, Salina Central and Hays all advanced as far as team scores are concerned to next Mondays play in Lawrence. Hays collectively shot a 312 as a team, Salina Central shot 322 and Hays shot 324.

In addition, Ben Hargrave of Salina South (70), Jeff Keenan of Great Bend (78), Tanner Neeland of Great Bend (78), Chris Beneke of Valley Center (79) and Lucas Poulton of Liberal (82) also advanced to the 5A state finals in Lawrence next Monday.  

Catch It Kansas spoke with Paul Buller the head golf coach at Newton after his team captured the regional title.

“Just in the last couple of weeks we have had it back together”, said Buller about his team’s performance.

Buller went on to add that his winning squad came and played a practice round on Friday at Salina Municipal.

“I think that gave us a lot of confidence that we could do well”, added Buller.

Catch It Kansas also spoke with Patrick Newell the head golf coach at Salina Central, Newell talked about his squads second place regional finish.

“After the nine hole scores at the turn we were in jeopardy and some of the kids had their heads down a bit”, said Newell.

“Luckily we did qualify”, added Newell.
