Wichita West girls’ basketball team placed eight in the El Dorado tournament this past weekend.

To start the tournament, West played Mill Valley, the team that won the championship.. West put seven points on the board in the first half while Mill Valley was able to score 31. West fell to Mill Valley only scoring 25 points making the final score 77-25. This game was the highest scoring game for the Pioneers.

On Friday West took on Valley Center. Valley Center lost to East High on Thursday. The first quarter West had a total of four points while Valley Center had 15. West had their only double-digit scoring quarter during the second quarter. West lost to Valley Center with the final score being 60-24. Junior Aujanae McCoy was the lead scorer with 16 points. McCoy scored over half of West’s points.

For seventh place, West faced the Augusta Orioles. Destiny Elias was the top scorer of the game with a 10 points. The first quarter was one of the better quarters for West. Even though the Pioneers only made six points, they worked together as a team but as the game progressed West lost that skill. Augusta beat West by 31 points. The final score was 53-22.

“We worked hard, but we lacked mental toughness. In order to win, we have to learn to work harder for longer periods when we are tired,” explained senior Kayla Rider after the result of the El Dorado girls’ basketball tournament.

West will play at home on Tuesday, Jan. 31. The Pioneers will take on the North High Redskins.
