The varsity boys basketball team traveled to Southeast on Friday, Feb. 17. Earlier in the season West lost to Southeast by six points, but West did not let this happen again.

With 50 seconds left in the first quarter, West was down by three points. In the second quarter, West showed more offensive skills which allowed the team more shots.  With a minute and a half left in the first half West was up by one point by a score of 27-26.

Both the teams had seven team fouls. At the end of the first half, the score was tied at 31.

West began to drop behind in the third quarter, a minute left and West was down by five making the score 50-45. West worked hard as a team during the fourth quarter, but a couple mistakes allowed Southeast to tie the game and go into overtime.

Five minutes were added to the clock.

Both teams were pushing hard to get to the goal. West was up by two points with .6 of a second left and West’s Dequan Brown was fouled and sent to the line. Brown made both of his free throws making the final score West 70-66.

“(It was) a great win that we have been looking for all season. All week we were determined to get the job done and now we will repeat the same process for South and hopefully get the win,” said senior Moose Mboob.

West High Senior Jeremy Wilson agreed with Mboob’s sentiment.

“We finally put the pieces together and worked as a team but Southeast did put up a fight,” said Wilson.

West will head to South High on Tuesday, Feb. 21. The first time West defeated South and the Pioneers are planning on doing it again. The game will start at 7:30 p.m.
