Trinity Academy girls’ basketball for the first time in its history won its first round game in a midseason tournament and placed a school-record fourth place at the Eli J. Walter Tournament at Berean Academy.

Trinity came out running in its first game against Burrton and put it on them. Trinity came out of that game with a 49-24 victory and a newfound confidence in their fast break.

“We made decisions a lot sooner and were able to push the ball up the floor faster,” said senior Blair Bohm.

After a game in which the fast break was so successful, Trinity decided that that was the strategy for the rest of the week.

“We had to fast break like crazy,” said senior Sarah Lewis. “That was our goal for all the games once we saw how well Monday worked.”

The next game they ran into a stone wall named Berean Academy. Berean is the No. 2 team in Class 2A and the Warriors haven’t lost a game all year. Trinity tried the same fast break style, but couldn’t get the same results as they lost by a larger margin than they had won the first game by, 49-22.

“[Berean] just matched our pace,” said Lewis.

Against Word of Life the Knights had a noticeable size disadvantage, but kept the game close through the first half as they were down 19-15 going into the break.

The second half was a different story though as Trinity came out flat. The Knights were outscored 16-8 in the third quarter and Word of Life never looked back from there, as Word of Life won 46-36.

Trinity has had problems coming out of second half all season and senior Abby Ressuer was unsure about why that it is.

“I think it’s a product of a bunch of things,” said Ressuer. “Conditioning, leadership [and] passion I guess.”

Sophomore Ashley West led the Knights with 10 points against Word of Life as Word of Life’s Knowles led all scorers with 19.

Even though the Knights’ fast break worked well in the two of the Knights’ three games, senior Hannah Henry thinks the half court offense needs some work.

“We just need to run it,” said Henry. “I’m pretty sure everyone know it it’s just that we don’t run it.”

Henry has been out since before Christmas with a torn ACL, she will miss the rest of the season.

Trinity will travel to Garden Plain on Tuesday as the Knights resume Central Plains League Play.
