After a successful cross country season with the Blue Aces earlier this school year, head Track and Field coach Michael Draut is ready to lead Wichita East through City League competition this track season.

In his 12th season as head coach at East, Draut is excited for another opportunity to work with young athletes and compete in the Greater Wichita Athletic League. He hopes that the team can improve off of performances from last season and continue the success east has had under his direction.

Last year, three East records were broken and senior Haleigh Lewis had an exciting finish at the State Track and Field championships held at Wichita State.

On the boys’ side, East will return senior distance runners Tanner Follis, and Aaron Heil, junior hurdler and high jumper JJ Normore and senior javelin thrower Gehrig Keane.

For the girls, junior standout distance runner Carlin Greene will be returning alongside senior Savana Cross, who recently signed to run with McPherson College. The girls distance team will be full of young talent this year and be anxious to prove themselves in the competitive Greater Wichita Athletic League.

“Competitive spirit is alive at East High,” said Draut. “Our athletes are focused on getting better and competing at the top levels.”

The Aces first meet of the season will be the Southeast Invitational held at the Wichita Northwest stadium and include competition from most of the City League (no KMC or Bishop Carroll) as well as Emporia, Maize, Maize South and Hays. It will take place 3:30 p.m. on Friday Mar. 30.
