Cate Dunn will provide senior leadership for East

When East combines boys and girls cross country it makes practicing easier and fosters the feeling of family among East runners.

“We’re close friends and work well with each other,” senior Cate Dunn said.

Most runners are friends outside of the sport, so finding supportive teammates is easy. Additionally, the large team is due to the reputation of friendship among runners the team has from previous years.

“The team is a close knit group,” assistant coach Darham Rogers said. “They work hard and support one another through workouts.”

Varsity boy runners this year include junior Aaron Heil, senior Will Marsh, senior Jesse Parker, junior Tanner Follis and senior Jake Seamster-Davis. The remaining two varsity spots will be decided later when more time trials are done.

Girl runners include Dunn, sophomore Carlin Greene, junior Kristen Lumpkins, junior Abby Amstutz, junior Andrea Livingston and sophomore Lauren Sinik.

East has a strong, experienced team that will be an asset in the City League this year.

Sophomore Jake Faflick emphasized the importance of a strong returning boys varsity team. Faflick also claims that, with five returning varsity runners, a top-two spot in GWAL is expected for the boys. Rogers agrees with

Faflick, as he expects a finish near the top for both boys and girls.

“We have a good mix of young runners and veterans on the team,” Rogers said. “They have been working hard.”
Rogers emphasized the importance of mentality in running, which will be the team’s biggest challenge.

“Mental barriers that we all put up to prevent us from doing something great will be our greatest challenges,” Rogers said.

The team will compete for the first time Saturday, Sept. 4 at the J.K. Gold Classic in Augusta. Competitors will include City League schools and more rural schools, such as Campus.
