Wichita Collegiate School's cross country team has continued to "run happy" though the season.  “Run happy” is their team slogan this season on their team t-shirts.  The Spartans are preparing for the regional meet at Lake Afton next Saturday with several runners hoping to qualify for the state meet.

At the Ark Valley Chisolm Trail League meet last Thursday, October 11th in El Dorado, four members of the team made the all-league squad. Junior Julia Camp made first team. Junior Arri Evans and sophomores Mark Meyer and Sophie Blackburn made all league second team. All four of them will be running this weekend at the regional meet.

The whole team is waiting in anticipation to go to regionals and they think their chances of state qualification are much better this year as opposed to last year.

"I'm excited to go to regionals,” said Evans. “I think my odds of going to state are pretty good this year because a lot of the teams this year aren't as competitive as others. This year there are only two or three really competitive teams.”

Coach Kristy Simcox is optimistic for the team and said that they have already surpassed expectations.

"We're hoping to qualify all four of them for state,” said Simcox. “But you just have to give it all you got and see what happens. We didn't expect a whole lot of people to come out, but to get thirteen was already accomplishing one goal."

Simcox is also already looking forward to next year.

"We're only losing Rachel Wolanski and Julia Brooks, so many will be back next year and hopefully we can get some new blood as well," said Simcox.

If the Spartans should qualify for state this weekend, they will compete at the 4A State Cross Country Meet on October 27th in Wamego.
