The Greenbacks had adjustments to make with a new coach last season, but there are still adjustments to be made in 2012. Returners know that their team needs to be more consistent in order to be successful in 2012.
Coach: Forrest Mazey (entering second year as head coach at Pratt with a school record of 4-6; overall 20-31)
2011 Recap: 4-6 overall, 4-2 league record, 2-1 in district
2012 District: Hugoton, Larned, Ulysses
Returning Starters: Offense 6, Defense 6
Returning Letterman: 20
2012 Schedule
2012 Outlook:
Offense: Key losses on the offense will be noticeable for the Greenbacks. All-league quarterback BJ Dean and all-league receiver Dylan Besser will not return in 2012, but seniors Skylar Dean and Anthony Cannata will reemerge in order to lead the offensive play for Pratt.
In 2011 all-league receiver Skylar Dean rushed for 111 yards and averaged 34 receiving yards per game while running back Cannata rushed for 220 yards in 59 carries and had 144 receiving yards.
The Greenbacks will use a spread offense in order to implement their running and passing game.
“I think when we find our guy to step in at quarterback whoever that may be we need to rally behind him and play and compete to the best of our ability and let the chips fall where they may,” said Coach Mazey.
Junior Brett Forshee will defend the offensive line alongside seniors Jordan Wells and Jared Gilmore.
Defense: Gilmore was an all-league linebacker as a junior. As a senior, he will lead junior linebackers Bryson Cruz and Cesar Regalado to form the back end of the 4-3 defense.
The Greenbacks opponents averaged 36.3 points per game last season. Senior defensive ends Weston Riner and Robbie Eggleston will look to put a stop to such high scoring games.
Odds and Ends: Pratt fell below expectations in 2011. They opened up their season with a 43-0 loss to league champion Hesston. The Greenbacks evened up with a 35-0 win over Kingman in their second game.
Pratt won two games in a row at the end of the regular season, but before then they did not have back-to-back victories.
“We need to be more consistent this season,” said Coach Mazey. “We were very hot and cold last year, and to be competitive week in and week out in 4A we have to have consistency every week.”
