“Not to take anything away from Holcomb, they are a good team, but we have to play better on the offensive line and our linebackers have to get to their drops and cover both the pass and run better than we did last Friday,” Meade head coach Scott Moshier said before the game. “We have worked on these issues and feel that we have corrected our mistakes and are ready to play tonight.”
Lakin’s head coach Jeff Fuss said the Buffaloes were big, physical and fast. Something Lakin might have trouble adjusting to. Little did he know that senior running back and safety Trevin Wiens would have a breakout night.
On Meade’s first offensive drive Weins rolled into the end zone for the Buffaloes first score. 7-0 Meade.
Lakin junior running back Gage McAtee was the Broncs work horse for the night. He had a huge 30 yard gain up the middle of the field but despite the great field position on first and ten, a high throw turned into a nightmare for Lakin’s offense. Weins turned the play into a 60 yard interception for a touchdown.
Lakin got another chance when Caleb Seeger rolled out and hit Dalton Shalberg on a quick out. He kept his feet in bounds and put the Broncs in the red zone. Another chance to score for Lakin but its hopes were shattered when Wiens dropped back into coverage and picked off another pass for a 75 yard touchdown. He also recovered a fumble on the next drive giving Weins three defensive touchdowns.
“The defensive line got pressure on the quarterback and our linebackers got in there to hit them in the mouth,” Wiens said. “All I did was pick up the rest and take it to the house.”
He said not a whole lot was going through his mind when he made the interceptions and touchdowns. He just wanted to focus on getting the win.
“I was just thinking don’t over celebrate and reward the people that made it happen, like the offensive line.”
He would end the night with six touchdowns all together, three on offense and three on defense. Last year Wiens did not record a single interception, so this game was special. However, six touchdowns is not his personal best.
“Last year I had seven against Oakley in the first round of playoffs.”
McAtee finishes the game with a touchdown for his stats but Meade took home the win 63-14. Both teams advance to 1-1 on the season.
