Before going into to tonight's contest, Maize South had given up just three points in three games. Head Coach Brent Pfeifer said that the off-season workouts were key to the defense's success.
Pfeifer also said that Andover Central is a well coached team who would play aggressively in the game.
The Maverick's defense got going early. In the first quarter Andover Central's Lucas Miller gets the ball. He coughs it up and the Mavericks recover.
The offense made the most of the opportunity. Maize South Quarterback Chase Bell runs it in to give the Mavericks a 7-0 lead.
Trying to answer, Blake Meier drops back, he tosses it to the outstretched hands of Landon Smith, who grabs the ball and takes it all the way to the two-yard line.
Jesse Rodgers finished the job with a dive over the endzone. The missed extra point puts Maize South up 13-0.
In the second the Jaguars got rolling. Meier hits Zach Locf for the quick touchdown to cut the Mavericks' lead to just six going into halftime.
In the third, Maize has the answer. Bell throws a 35-yard lazer to Wesley Phillips. From there Bell runs it in tomake it 19-7.
The Jags try to claw their way back. Meier passes to Kolten Holinde who takes it all the way to the one-yard line. Meier, too, gets it done on the ground for the touchdown.
But the Mavericks were just too much. Chase Bell tosses it to Alex Orth who gets it around the corner for the touchdown to put Maize South up 33-14
Andover Central tacks on another touchdown, but it wasn't enough. The final score was 33-21 Mavericks.
