Competing against eight other teams, the Kapaun Mt. Carmel’s boys’ swim team attended the Emporia tournament Jan. 28. KMC placed second behind Wichita East. Junior Luke Vanderpool said that East is a big threat for the team because it is a 6A team with a larger talent pool.

“I expected us to get a third place behind Olathe Northwest and East, so it was a pleasant surprise when we beat Olathe Northwest to get second place,” Vanderpool said.

So far this season, the team has beat Wichita South, Southeast, North and Northeast, and also has placed second at the El Dorado Invitational. Senior Christian May said that key swimmers, including seniors Matt Ayres, Tony Baldessari and Paul Knapp and juniors Matt Kaysen, Calvin Lies and Vanderpool, have provided for this success. Both Vanderpool and May said that the team still has room for improvement with turns, starts and pacing during races.

“The team as a whole did pretty well,” Vanderpool said. “All the teams had slow times that day, including our own. We were able to overcome that a little bit better than the other teams.”

The team competes next in the Varsity City League meet Feb. 9 at East.
