If the Garden City Buffaloes thought they were safe at the top of the Western Athletic Conference, they would be wrong. The boys basketball team was a half game lead over the Dodge City Red Demons. But on Tuesday night they fell to the Liberal Redskins in a suspenseful comeback 67-62 to put the Demons ahead in the WAC title hunt.
The Buffs came out strong but the Redskins took an early one point lead. Senior Jake Curran found Braden Taylor to regain the lead for the Buffs and they went on a scoring run. In the second half, a new Liberal boys team emerged from the locker room. The Redskins seized control of the game and refused to give up. They attacked from the perimeter and revealed the weaknesses in the Buffs defense. At the end of the third quarter the Buffs knew they were in trouble.
The Liberal Redskins pulled out the upset in a comeback victory 67-62. They shook up the WAC standings once again.
The girls game was not as breathtaking. The Lady Buffs took off like a horse at the starting gate and left the Lady Skins in the dust. Seniors Taryn Temple and Kristen Heiman seized the lead early with their dominance both in the lane and on the perimeter of their offense. At halftime the Lady Buffs led 39-16.
When they returned to the court they were refeshed and ready for action. Liberal battled to come back but they would only get so far. The Lady Buffs win in Liberal 66-38.
