DOUGLASS, Kan.—
The Douglass boys’ basketball team managed to squeak by the Belle Plaine Dragons Friday, Feb. 3 as the Bulldogs came out with a 61-50 victory in overtime.Heading into the game the Bulldogs had several expectations.
The Dragons kept things difficult for the Bulldogs as they jumped to a 14-8 lead in the first quarter. At halftime, Belle Plaine remained with the lead 27-20.
Douglass made things tough in the third quarter by racking up fouls. The Bulldogs trailed 40-31 at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was a turnaround for Douglass as the Bulldogs managed to slowly creep their way back into the game.
With 1:35 remaining in regulation play, sophomore Cody Holthaus hit a key 3-pointer to trail by one point.
On the next trip up the court, Belle Plaines’ Dakota Richardson was sent to the line where he made one of two free throws, 46-44.
Only 46.2 seconds stood on the clock when the Dragons left a wide open lane for Payton Fraley to drive to the bucket for an easy lay-in to make it 46-all.
Time chipped away as both Douglass and Belle Plaine had their one chance to seal the deal, but neither did sending the game into overtime.
The Bulldogs carried their adrenaline into overtime as they only allowed the Dragons to score four points to come out with a 61-50 win.
Senior Ronnie Sobanek was the leading scorer for both teams throughout the night with a total of 17 points. Chase Banister followed with 13 points.
Douglass advances to 9-6 overall for the season and 2-2 for the Central Plains League play.
The Bulldogs will play again at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb 7 at Douglass against the Trinity Academy Knights for homecoming.
